View Full Version : Fort Peck in July
I am looking at taking a week off in July and going to Fort Peck. Anyone have any suggestions on what the best method may be and if there is a better time to go. We will be staying at ##### creek. Thanks in advance for any help.

Last summer, the walleyes were solidly on a spinner bite pretty much throughout July. The hot spinner blade colors (for me anyway) were chartreuse or silver-and-blue.
How this year compares at Heck Creek (you can't use the word ##### on this message board) will depend a lot on when (and if) this winter ends and how quickly the water warms. Heck Creek is one of the last areas of the lake to warm and for the walleyes to turn on.
Last summer, by the last days of July the water was very warm and the bite tailed off because of it. In a more typical year, the fishing would hold up throughout the month.
If the lake opens late this year, you may still be solidly on a jig bite in the early days of July because of colder water temps. Fishing later in the month might be better. -- mark

Hey Mark whats your experience at Heck Cr. during the last week of May and the first week of June? I like the new name for ##### Cr. Thanks.

Mark;
Unless we get some large amounts of snow to fill the lake, one will not be able to launch a boat at "Heck Creek," even at the low water ramp. The Crooked Creek eye club is talking about the fall classic being at the dam, if the water level doesn't come up.I also have heard that the water level is still dropping like mad.
Maby if you have nothing else going on, do your snow dance for all of the areas that drain into the Missouri River. If you don't mind maby you could post the straight poop on what the situation is.

The action on Fort Peck each year starts at both ends and works toward the middle. The waters of the Big Dry Arm and the upper reaches of the reservoir (Timber Creek on up) tend to warm up first. As summer progresses, the action improves toward the middle of the lake.
In most years, in the last week of May and early June, the best action is going to be on the Big Dry Arm and from Timber Creek on up. By July, the middle portions of the lake are turning on. -- mark

Ooooof.....me doing any kind of dance brings awful pictures to mind.
As to the Heck Creek situation, John Little, the parks guy at Miles City, said FWP would be getting ready to use an old boat ramp, just north of the marina this spring. Hopefully, it'll be ready go at ice-out (if, in fact, the ice ever goes out this year). FWP will be building a road along the beach and in front of the marina to get to the old ramp.
Looking at the lake level right now, the boat ramp we used last year is probably up out of the water. FWP will be widening that ramp this year. They're going to make it wide enough so that they can run a dock down the middle and launch boats on each side of the dock. Pretty spiffy -- if we ever get enough water to use it. -- mark
