I realize this is not fishing related, but I was reading an article on time.com the other day that really got me fired up. The article is about drilling for oil in the arctic of Alaska. It sounds to me that the oil companies are going to jack the gas prices up over the summer so they will get the public support behind them to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Below is a quote from the first page of the article.

"But big oil is also optimistic that it can push through a bill before oil prices come down and the sense of crisis abates. "We are in a window, which basically forces us to go flat out," says Roger Herrera, a 33-year veteran of British Petroleum who now lobbies for opening ANWR in Washington. "We'll use a range of arguments. National security, dependence on unreliable sources in the Middle East, cost of energy. The best way of winning is to make people concerned about the cost of filling up their gas tank. It will all be over by September." "

Never read anything about "big oil" jacking prices up to get their way. Seems the prices are already jacked because of all the reasons stated. If we can pump oil domestically and the end result is cheaper fuel let's do it and not worry about unreliable sources of crude being disrupted. That oil under AK is not doing anyone any good in the ground..

As sportspeople, we must remember to take care of our natural
resources. While I am not against drilling in Alaska, I think
we should proceed cautiously. There are lots of capped oil wells
in the USA that could be pumped. Have seen it happen. The well gets drilled and then they cap it - will pump it when the price is right. Big oil certaily has its reasons for wanting to drill. First of all, it is probably cheaper to drill at today's prices than future prices. Maximizes profits.

1 HUGE problem with this is that most of the crude oil gained from alaska is of the quality to be used in automobiles (for unleaded gasoline), it would be used as other sources of petrolium products. Never thought that there were different grades of oil from the ground, but going to alaska last spring/summer and listning to a few experts theres quite a bit of information on oil that can hamper its use in many circumstances. I think it is time we start reducing our appetite for oil. Let's use our brains that the good lord gave us and start developing new man made fuels. Didn't we hear Al Gore a few years back he wanted to get rid of the combustion engine all together. He is no longer in Washington now look who we have in there now,two big oil men. Both in favor of going up to Alaska and distroying our last frontier. The ones that are doing all the complaining are the ones that put these two idiots in power. If gasoline does go to 3.00 a gallon don't come here and complain you are to blame. It is time we start developing new technologies not big oil companies controling our lives. Where is Al Gore?

Not a bad effort for a plant from an eco nazi. Look at your source, Time magazine is more liberal than Clinton.

Good question.....just where did he go? A guy with those kinds of great ideas should stick around and tell us how to live.
