Has anyone spent any time on Vermillion this year. Will be heading up there for the first time later this summer. Are there any general techniques that work better than others. Also any smallie info would be appreciated as well.
thanks - erik

Erik,

I fished Vermilion for the first time this year at the end of June first week of July. Several weeks of bad weather had slowed the walleye fishing and normal summer patterns were behind schedule.

The walleye we caught were on jigs and minnows and lindy rigs with worms fished on offshore humps and points in about 14'-20' of water.

The smallmouth fishing was just starting to turn on the last couple days with fish being caught on 1/8 ounce tubes in crawdad colors. Some fish were stil guarding beds and were quite aggressive. These fish were caught in very shallow water. Shoreline out to 8'-10'.

We fished mainly the East end of the lake. You may want to consider hiring a guide for a day to get a handle on locations and presentations as they change with the fronts and seasons.

You can get info from the Lake Vermilion, Mn web page.

Good luck,

Gill

Green bucktail Jig and minnow or leech, rather than live bait rig, if going vertical! Try pulling Jr. Thundersticks in 2-12 fow in morning and evening hours. Midday head for deeper water with bottom bouncers and Jr. Thunder. A group of buddies "2 boats" were up there monday and tuesday and pounded the 12"-20" walleye with 1 28", they also caught 1 46" musky and a handful of pike in the 20-30" range. no smallies though. They stuck around potato island. Didn't do well till Mon. evening, Tue was gangbusters!

GOOD LUCK
