Pick any species you like and you'll find that there have been some whoppers caught in the Ely area lately!

Walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass are all hitting hard. Crappie are coming alive on the line while lake trout are heading to deeper waters as summer heats up.

With at least two 10 pound walleyes, two 4 pound or better smallies, and two northern pike weighing in at over 20 pounds, you can imagine the fish that are being caught last week!

Week ending July 25, 2004

We've heard of a fisherman who was heard complaining because all the walleye he has been catching lately are 5 pound or more and he hasn't been able to catch any "eating size". And this story has been repeated several times this week! All sorts of lakes, all sorts of people, catching some really nice sized walleye. Sort of makes you want to call in sick and go out and fish yourself, doesn't it!?

Over 10 walleyes were registered this last week weighing over six pounds. Bigger than eating size and dang nice fish!

The Catch & Release entries were full of walleye reports as well.

Northern pike and smallmouth have been caught too but nothing like the reports on the walleye.

The hot weather may have been slowing down some of the fishermen lately, but it doesn't seem to have affected the fish.

Come on up and try the Ely area fishing, but remember to bring sunscreen, a hat to cover your face and ears and drink plenty of liquids, it's hot out there!
