I posted this down the page a bit.. I have a few newer Shimano Spirex and Sahara Reels and a few Spirex Reels several years old. The new reels have taller Spools and a different angle on the top spool lip. The older reels have shorter spools. All Spools fit all reels, but is this wrong?

I had a problem like this with a new Stradic I bought in '00. When I went to switch the spools with a '99 model I found that the newer spool wouldn't fit on the older reel. It was close, but the diameter was just a little too small.

They might fit, but can you wind line onto them? The new reels I own have a longer thrust during rewind to increase the crossover patturn of the new "super" lines. This prevents the line from getting buried into the spooled line. I have several (12) Spirex 2000RD reels from '95 to '01 and I can exchange the spools on all of them but the newest ones. They will fit and real, but the line builds up on the front and back of the spool cavity. Mine have the push button release in the center because they are all rear drag.
The newer spool forward cavity angles also provide faster line release and, therefore, longer casting. Combined with Spiderwire or other super lines, these are smooth reels with all the extras.

Thanx for the info actually I sent Shimano 2 older Spirex Rear Drag Reels for repair. They were not "smooth". They sent me 2 Brand New Reels. The new reels they sent me are "fluiddrive" and look to have a slightly larger line roller. I still have 1 older Spirex still working fine to compare to.
