Head up to Quetico, the Canadian Side of the boundary waters if you enjoy camping and canoeing. Otherwise, lake erie is probably a good bet. Check out my post on my quetico pics. from this summer to see some of the smallies we caught.

Have fun,

Lake Erie and St. Clair in Ontario. Accept no substitute. If you hit those two lakes during the hot bite, which is a lot of the spring and fall, you'll forget every other "smallmouth" lake you've been on. I've tried others, but I keep going back to Erie and St. Clair.

I 2nd the vote for Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay in Ashland WI. I have fished it 5 times in past 2 years. Each trip we had 30-50 fish that ran 17" to 20".

This area is managed as a trophy fishery. 100% catch & release until mid-late June, then 1 fish that must be over 22" or 23".

Tight Lines !!

My vote would have to go for Rainy.

It'd be awful tough to beat Vermilion. It's a factory! Caught at least fifteen 20's last summer in a single week.

Love the subject...as the author of the new Fishing Hot Spots book, SMALLMOUTH! America's Top Bass Waters. After much research I would answer the question as follows: Canada - Rainy, Quetico Provincial Park, Lake of the Woods: Minnesota - Vermilion, Mille Lacs, Boundary Water Canoe Area: and for Wisconsin (my home state) Sturgeon Bay-Green Bay, Chequamegon Bay (22-inch size limit) and Wisconsin River. These are not listed in any order. But what is the best in the continent - probably Erie and St. Clair. It's great topic...and I love to do the research.
