Hi all, sorry I have not been on message board, been busy.
My dad, Ron Kanipes (Goober) has been in the hospital twice since Christmas.
He had pneumonia two weeks ago, left the hospital on X-mas eve, back in 5 days later. He still has pneumonia with a staph infection labeled as MSRA. This is very bad, as we hope meds will inprove him.
His condition is not improving, but not "getting worse", so this is a good thing.
His lung specialist said he has never seen both lungs as full as his are (which are full). He said this would ave killed a normal man.
Dad is 63 yrs old, I always said he was a #### of a man, now I know for sure.
Our outlook is good, as MSRA w/ pneumonia is grim.

He is in Riverside Hosp, rm 7213. Ph # 614-544-7275, those of you who know him, give him a shout w/ encouragement. He will say
"I will be fine, no problems" but that's what all great men say.

Ray, this staph is much worse that he had at I.L. two years ago, I will e-mail you soon(i hope).

Scott,
Best wishes for a full recovery for your dad. There's a 12+ pounder swimming around out there with his name on it so tell him to get healed up & rested for the April bite.

Good Luck,
Steve

Scott,

Sorry to hear your Dad is ill. Here's to a speedy recovery to him. When you say Riverside Hospital, I assume you mean in Columbus? When he gets feeling like visitors, I'll stop by. Maybe a new Reef Runner or two would make him feel better-it always works for me! ;-) Take care.

Soctt, best of luck to your dad. Hang in there for him. That infection can be tough but so can fishermen, especially mature walleye guys.

Hi all, Thanks for the replies. I will show him tomorrow your words.
I was with him all day. I spoke w/ doctors today. His ex-rays are only slightly improving, but not getting worse, this is the good thing. They said he would be there at least another week and staying until he is better. I think the meds are keeping him stable, and should turn to better soon.
We spent most of the morning looking at GPS/sonar units for the boat
this year. Can't wait.
Tim-Toolman, yes Riverside in Columbus. Stop in or call anytime.
He like to hear/see a fellow fisherman. The mornings are best for him as he feels better, he might even tell you a few jokes.
Dont worry about cathing anything, it is not an airbourne virus.
THANKS again,
Scott, Scoutin'Sam

Scott,
Really hope your dad gets back on track.Staph infections are really hard to get under control but there are some powerfull drugs available these days.Sounds like the ol' boy is a fighter and that can make all the difference.I would give him a call but he couldn't hear me as I am in the middle of my yearly battle with the whole sinus/drainage into the vocal chord area/laryngitis mess that winter brings with it.So,just let him know that everyone up here in V-town is thinking and praying for his recovery. Scott,

I am very familiar with Riverside Methodist. As an ID (infectious disease) industry specialist I will tell you that if it were my father, I'd want him at Riverside, as well...and he lives in Cincinnati. Cincinnati has very good hospitals, but I believe that Riverside is unparalleled. The ID physicians and Pulmonologists at Riverside are top-notch.

If he's in his own room on the 7th floor, he must be doing quite well given the circumstances. Otherwise he'd be in the "unit" (ICU). That's a good sign!

There are some new drugs (carbapenem class) that have good activity against MRSA. And these drugs weren't available even a few years ago.

Having good nurses care for your father is very important, as well. Don't hesitate to speak with a manager if you believe that your father could be receiving better care or more attention.

Sounds like you're keeping him focused on fun things (fishing, looking at new electronics) and that's a great idea, too.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Hi Scott ... sounds like the ole' Goober got a lump of coal for Xmas. I'll try to give Ron a call tomorrow. The Ice storm knocked the power out for about 5 days here at IL & I just read your e' before comin' to WC ... tell the old fart to hang ten & to put more clothes on for the 27/27 nite-bite ~ just razzin' & I hope he pulls through for another season of skirt-chasin', story-tellin' n' fishin'...

take care & God Bless,
Ray

Hi All, TX for the replies. Dad was released yesturday afternoon. I thought he should have been in a few more days, but ex-rays improved enough to be sent home. We were scared for a while because things were not improving. He has a lot of healing to do yet.
We will be ready for the spring action. We will be busy come Feb-March getting boat ready.
Chris, tx for the reassurance on Riverside.
Scott, Scoutin' Sam
P.S. I remember @ 6 yrs ago I put a 2.5 saugeye in antrim lake.

That's great news, Scott!

If the clinicians weren't completley satisfied with your father's progress, he'd still be hospitalized. Physicians rarely discharge patients too early because of ethics and liability. The specialists with whom I'm familiar treat their patients as though they were their own family members.

Studies have shown that people prefer to heal in the comfort of their own homes rather than in a hospital room, too. So maybe your dad will be more comfortable and relaxed in a familiar environment.

Your dad's a young 63. He still has many good, healthy years ahead of him.

Congratulations to you and your family!
