Hey guys, nice to be "up and running", just came off a 6 day Binge in the Lex/Mansfield (Ohio)area
with no Elect, or Water! Gee kinda felt being on the big pond! Hard to believe my COOLER survived
the Elements...Looks like with this warm spell, I would assume according to Lake Vision, the lake
should be accessible from Catawba, or maybee Mazuriks SHORTLY! I know there's a lil cool down
this week-end, just wondering ....If anybody is in the area, feel free to leave a post, im BORED,
and ready for some Eyes....Have my Gps numbers from 2002 out of Catawba where we hammered
the Eyes, PS im not looken for "Spikes" or 15" Fish... looken for "Hogs" that have already served the
Lake 10 X over!...Ready to fire up the Evinrude.....Jack
Glad to see you're back jack. No water? Hope you kept yourself well hydrated !
Lake conditions you ask?
50mph winds + every river oozing massive amounts of mud = not prime time
I'm sure we could catch a few at Spreaders on the Huron river !!
01-14-2005, 02:43 PM
Gary, thanks for your concern! Hydrated you ask? OHHH YEAH, Steady diet of Naturals
kept me alive! Gary I was thinking about the same diet on Sat, but now have to work!
I really think in a week or two weather permitting, its very possible to do the "ICE"
thing in the boat...Took a steady pull of 27-30" Eyes through the ice in the winter of
2002! Releasing the "stock fish" of 19-24" leaving to spawn! Spreaders on the River
sounds very tempting, we'll hook up soon! Would like to here a post from someone
"west" on the shore ice....Thanks Jack
01-14-2005, 10:07 PM
Jack, there is no shore ice. Everything is open and muddy. May make some ice if the wind goes down and the temperature stays down, but right now nothing is available. If you come up and want a change of scenery, you might want to join Ollie at Diamonds. LOL
01-15-2005, 11:11 AM
Joey, thanks for the update....Jusy Maybee in a couple 3 weeks or sooner we can get the boats
out and start hammering some Eyes! Wishfull thinking i guess, yeah a change of scenery would
be nice...Dont think your gonna see "hard water" this year, but anythings possible! I was almost
certain everything should be accessible.Keep me updated, THANKS Jack...PS tell that old Fart
Ollie hello from me!
01-16-2005, 07:54 AM
i saw two boats put in at mazuriks yesterday. i wasnt around when they got done fishing. i dont know if they did any good. water is still stained. i have a marina in mind to try for some perch, i'll let you know how i do. keep your tip up and good luck.
01-16-2005, 11:34 AM
are you just casting for the perch or do you mean ice fishing?? I hear the marinas can be good for when ice is in. After this week looks like that may be a possiblity.
01-18-2005, 03:23 PM
Hey CoolerKing, When you're done chasing those winter eyes get in touch with me. I'm putting on a wild game feast on Sunday March 6th in Fairport Harbor. Huge raffle, cards, adult beverages, fish stories and good eats. Let me know if you're interested. It's open to everyone. Tickets are advance sale only!
01-18-2005, 04:59 PM
Well Brian, i guess i can "scrap" the boat idea....According to the forcast looks like all
the public access ramps will be (or already are) LOCKED in tight! Another 4 or 5 days
im assuming you will be able to ice fish the marinas! Dixie Chicken, sounds like a feast
and a fun time to be had, will definately consider! Looks like the next report in the Western
Basin should be from "hard water"!.....If anybody ventures out on the bay, or some marinas
leave a post.....Thanks Jack
01-18-2005, 05:06 PM
CoolerKing E-Mail me @ email@example.com for more info. We have some cool stuff going on.
01-18-2005, 07:10 PM
I talked to GR and he said the bay was clear at about noon yesterday and when he crossed back over at 4pm it was iced over. Im going to hit some local places hopefully this weekend for some panfish. Maybe next week hitting the marinas for some perch
01-20-2005, 12:21 PM
My buddy Shawn has been catching some eyes at Put in Bay of the eice. I'm going through some nasty #### this week, but I'm planing to go there next week. He runs Put in Bay Ice Guides. If you're interested give him a call (419) 651-2130.
01-20-2005, 12:56 PM
Ice is safe over there? Let me know if you make a run I'll possibly ride along!
01-20-2005, 02:52 PM
Calling out REEL MAGIC! I know your out there, gimme some skinny on Ice from Mainland
or the Islands! Ready when you are......Thanks Jack
01-20-2005, 04:43 PM
Looking like mid week next week. I'm ready to stick some!!!
01-21-2005, 09:34 AM
From what they say, yes. And fishing has been good. I was going to go this weekend but I have some issues to resolve. It would be nice to hook up next week and go. Let me see how things turn out for me and we'll set somwthing up for next week.
01-24-2005, 10:32 AM

See my report below-Erie Ice/Fishing.
01-24-2005, 07:38 PM
is it a new post? cant find any info
Yes, it is under Erie Ice/Fishing post. That is, if you are reffering to the passage between Catawba and South Bass as the South Passage.
01-25-2005, 07:15 AM
Are you the same Jack that fishes with Mike Laliberty occasionally? I have a buddie that lives in Port Clinton that is making the rounds and checking the ice. I'll let you know what I hear.
01-25-2005, 02:17 PM
Mark, Yes Mike does fish with me occassionally, before he took up the "carnival business"! In our
neck of the woods he is know as "FLUFF"...Im assuming you know the meaning! Now back to
business, I have a couple "scouts" in the Camp Perry /Catawba/Marblehead area, just waiting
for some positive feedback! MAYBEE we can stick some this week-end???...Let me know what you
find out Mark! Also Bono Joe, give me an update and tell Ollie im riding "shot-gun", if he's up for some
Hard Water!....Thanks ......Jack
01-25-2005, 02:29 PM
I talked to Fluff yesterday and told him that we were going to try and go this weekend if we can. Im still trying to teach him how to fish. My best friends father lives right beside camp perry. Thats where we always go out. He propabaly told you about the 14 pounder I caught out there. I think you guys were up there that day. I'll keep you posted on the ice condition out that way. Mark
01-25-2005, 03:49 PM
Mark, know what you mean...Fluff is the ONLY guy i know that can break his line off 3 times
PERCH fishing, but he has nailed some Hogs on the Hard Water! Talked to a reliable source
over the bridge in Port Clinton. They are fishing off Camp Perry 2 mile???...Did NOT know the
thickness of ICE or if they are running "machines" or walking!...So at this point i would be VERY
CAUTIOUS!...I dont plan on going untill I get further reports! Congrads on that 14 #, would love to
see that beast....Thanks ....Jack

Soooooo........ where's this 14lber at?? Huh? Got any pictures?? Show me Baby!!!!
01-25-2005, 06:14 PM
checked ice off camp perry on 1/24 with argo.ice was 5 inches at 2.5 miles out wont be long if we dont get another thaw. water was coco at best.needs to clean up
01-25-2005, 06:44 PM
Katfish is your argo the tan one that was out of mazurics last winter? How do you like the argo? They have always seemed like the cats meow for safety unless an airboat is in the budget.
01-25-2005, 10:25 PM
Cooler King - Made the rounds today. Nobody out anywhere. Usually starts off Catawba State Park and moves West. Ice as far as you can see but not good clear ice as it has a lot of shove ice. Have to hope for more cold weather. Mid February is when it starts to heat up anyway. Will keep checking and let you know when it heats up. Ollie says Diamonds beats Spreaders anytime! LOL
01-26-2005, 05:57 AM
no.its green with enclosed top.ya your right on they are the cats. *ss.may try to get out fri/sat.winds are looking good nne all weekend .did awesome fishing in the area north of C.P. two years ago.should be the same way if this warm spell dont hit us.but as fate would have it.it looks like a warm up for next week ..some good advise talk to the good lord and PRAY FOR ICE!!!!
I have always that the Argo's seem like a safe way to go and have even looked into buying one before. They are definately not inexpensive. Anyhow, what I was wondering if you have ever gone through the ice on one before. If so, how easy/hard was it to get out of the water and back up on the ice? Could you drive is back up or would you need a winch?
Thanks for the info.
01-27-2005, 02:39 PM

01-29-2005, 09:24 AM
I was up Friday, and there was very little activity around the Catawba-Marblehead area.......a couple of sleds went out from Mazurik...but there were no clusters of shanties anywhere to be seen. I drilled thru 10" of ice right near Mazurik ramp, and got skunked, then went to a favorite marina and had some fun, fast pan fish-perch action mid day. most of the perch and gills were small, but I did score one 10" plus perch in the same spot. Be safe out there...
01-29-2005, 04:08 PM
just got home from making the rounds. talked to group who say they brought in limit but caught eighty, lots of smalls, half mile out off miller ferry dock. saw some they brought in. 8-10" of ice. another group brought in 17 fish. camp perry was slow. a couple of groups had one, and said another group had 6. going out 5 miles, 8-10" of ice, but some thin spots!!!!!
01-29-2005, 09:29 PM
Fished today ice is ruff but passable. Noth west of mouse lots of fish there. Did well.
01-30-2005, 09:38 AM
Hey Tim (Reel) good to hear you got on the fish!Looked like alot of guys made their way out there.
A buddy and I were up and did the marina thing and caught a nice mess of panfish~both perch and gills.
Lots of good safe ice (10") there and we fished twenty steps from the truck!Had a ball but I`m buggin` to get out on the walleyes...I should be ready to go by next weekend.Hope the ice and the fishing is still "on".
Let me know if I can help you out setting guys up and such.Bought a new underwater camera since last winter to go along with the Zerc. color point and its awesome..email me at LEES4180@webtv.net if you want...Len
01-30-2005, 06:37 PM
Fished Sat, Sun NW of Mouse Island prob 1.5 mile out! Saturday seemed to be a better bite in the
afternoon! Struggled Sun with the amount of "throw backs" and lack of bite! Second area of "shove ice"
seemed to be most productive on Sun! Good Luck, ice was @ 8" when I packed up!.....Jack
01-31-2005, 02:49 AM
Where are you guys going out from? The state park or somewhere else? I've heard that the ice between catawba and mouse is bad a lot.
01-31-2005, 03:06 AM
Going out of Millers Boat Ferry on the "point", Your right this area is usually the last area to freeze
and will be the first area to "break off" if you get a strong S wind, or current alone will eat it!...Stay
away from Mouse as the airboats are using that area to transport! Good Luck....Jack
01-31-2005, 02:34 PM
Did good on sunday, but today (monday) we only had 3 bites all day. Saw one fish on ice out of a zillion people out there.
01-31-2005, 03:37 PM
WE had a few today, three I think. North west of Mouse. Fishing everyday now firstname.lastname@example.org
02-01-2005, 01:22 PM
Reel Magic - Do you guide this area?
02-02-2005, 02:51 AM
Yes I'm an ice guide if your interested, give me a call. I post here to keep every one up to date on the bite, ice, ect. ect. I run a simi guided taxie that lots of guys on this site use. I also have shanties,Fowlhunters@cros.net 419-732-8873
02-02-2005, 06:30 AM
Fished off the ferry docks 1.5 miles. Got 1 fish 24". Marked a ton but the water is still muddy. Only saw one other dink caught. I think if the water clears it should get hot again. Tim (reel magic) does Eric work with you?? He gave us a ride back, much appreciated. Randy
02-02-2005, 07:58 PM
Yes Eric and I work together. And your welcome. There were some fish taken to day!!!
02-03-2005, 03:24 AM
what do you guys think the 40s and light South winds forecast for the next few days will do to the ice? I was planning on a Sunday trip but not real sure about it now.
02-03-2005, 08:48 AM
Are you going up with Fluff tommorow? I think I might go up tonight. I bought a new toy I want to try out. 320 deg B&W remote pan camera. Should be good for pearch fishing also.
02-03-2005, 01:27 PM
Mark,YES Fluff and I are headed up in the morn or maybe late tonight???...Really considering the Mazuric
area opposed to NW Mouse, hearing some good reports out that way! Hope my "stick" is better than last
Sun...Call me if u know something i dont! Thanks.....Jack
02-03-2005, 02:07 PM
Is the wife going to sign the permission slip for Sunday too?? Do you have wheels lined up or are you hooking up with a guide? SHOW MEEEEEEEEE!
02-03-2005, 03:38 PM
Brian, Take the SKIRT off bud, the ICE will be fine! The Wheels, now
thats another story maybe some ice taxi's are running out of Mazurics
or the guide is an option, will know more tomm...Oh and by the way Sun is
"free and clear" so I think you better SHOW MEEE...Thomas!
02-03-2005, 04:03 PM
Coolerking, could you give me the directions to Mazurics from Route 2 out of Toledo. Thanks
02-03-2005, 07:02 PM
Tom, come past Port Clinton till you get to 53 (Catawba) turn on 53 (left)....Follow down
to 163 turn RIGHT...But on the corner of 53, 163, get your bait @ Richards! Follow 163
prob 4 miles? will see a sign for Mazurics, turn Left....Ps there is a bar @grill @ this exit!
from there...Happy Hard Water!......Jack
02-03-2005, 07:08 PM
Had a good day north of Marblehead about 5.5 mi. Running every day now. 419-732-8873
02-04-2005, 09:04 PM
Fished Kellys today started good then died. Found a late day bite to late to get everyone on the fish. Eric, Bob and I got ours. Most had a fish or two. Very nice day on the lake, Early trip leaving at 6:00am Sat. be back about 7:00am for the rest of our guys. I have some pic's just to beat to screw with it tonight. 419-732-8873
02-05-2005, 09:11 PM
Fished today did very well some limits. Some really nice fish. Same area. 419-732-8873
02-06-2005, 12:59 PM
Went outta Mazurik's on Fri and I by myself caught 28 not counting the one my buddies caught(we were well over 30). I wasn't able to keep a single one on account of the 15" min size limit (oh well... catching is still catching). I planed to go out again on Sat but my ATV broke, so I had to come back home... BUMMER! Sure hope the ice holds for another week or so as I need another fishin' fix, BAD!
02-06-2005, 01:29 PM
Reel Magic, keep me updated...With this warm spell dont know the conditions, but gonna need
your service next Sun, not enough machines to go around! Fished Fri West of Kelly's only one
5.5 #, 15 throwbacks....Keep up the good work Tim..........Jack
02-06-2005, 02:20 PM
count Al and I in if the ice holds up.
02-06-2005, 03:28 PM
3 of us were out this morning for about 3 hours abt 5 mi out of Mazurics. Caught 6 walleye in the 3-4 lb. class. Maybe 6 dinks. Fished 32' of water, most of the fish caught were suspended abt 24-26'.
Crossed a 1'crack in our fishing area that made me kinda nervous. On our way back in, it was closed up. Near shore ice, kinda sloppy.
02-06-2005, 03:49 PM
went out sat. seen some big hogs on shore. fish 7 miles out how is the ice now. It was getting sloppy at Mazuric's coming in?
02-06-2005, 06:37 PM
Fished west of Kelley's all day in 32 FOW 7 miles out of Mazurick's. Caught 16 nice walleyes b/w the three of us, with every bit that many in throwbacks. Best times were just before noon and just before dark. Smaller Buckwing spoon, perch colored packed w/minnows was hot with the emerald green w/gold back smaller pimple being a close second. I even caught one on a straight hook split shot and slip bobber with a minnow. All were suspended in 25 to 28 FOW so the Vexilar was a must. we fished near the big crack and some people had trouble getting back accross. Ice was ugly on the way back to the ramp and doubt will improve with warmer rainy weather and wind on the way. Hurry and get em now while their hot cause it probably will not last. Hope I am wrong.
Good Luck All !!!!!
02-07-2005, 09:13 AM
Fished out of mazurics on sat. and 2 of us limited in 3 hours all between 3-8 lbs. use your vexlar guys, the bigger fish were 8-10 ft off the bottom. We caught all small fish close to bottom until we figuired out that the bigger fish were all up high. After that we only caught a few small fish.
02-07-2005, 01:34 PM
Fished same area North of Kelly's mixed results. Bet I had 50+ small fish, Ice should hold for a day or two but water on the ice will make it unsafe to travel. I did find a group of fish north in 36' but lots of spikes some nice fish mixed in. I hear there's been a bite near A can also. I have not fished it myself. Not fishing this week call friday for updates or check here!!!
