NOT SAFE (AT ALL)

there is open wate off mouse island ...why would you even think about making a trip to PIB. The ice is not safe yet (NOT EVEN CLOSE). The only people that will tell you that it is safe are the local ice guides tring to make a few bucks , By putting someones life on the line. Dont make any sense to fish unsafe ice.Lake Erie kills stupid people every year.
I heard the ice over at PIB is in good shape and there have been people fishing over there. Saw a few Air Boats fishing over there last weekend. I do not know how safe the ice is getting there though. The ice between Mouse and S. Bass is always shaky with the currents that run through there. However, I did talk to an Air Boat on Sunday, 01/23 and he said that he did not break through the ice when he came over from PIB. I am hoping to head up Fri to Catawba and checking things out. I do not know if we are going to look off of Catawba or if we are going to look off of Camp Perry.
Katfish, I was wondering how you like the Argo? Have you ever broken through the ice with it? If so, how did you get it out? Could you drive it out or would you have to use a winch to get it out?
P.S. I am not an ice guide. I do not want to die on the ice. However, I do not want to die of Cabin Fever either.

Carry yourself a hook that you can slip into a hole and use it as an anchor to winch yourself out . Understandably you would have to exit the Argo to do this or if someone else is near by they could assist. The manuals for ATV's suggest carrying an anchor to dig into the ground to aid winching if there is nothing else around . Just a thought. Wear a floatation suit also.....
It is not necessary to change

fished sat. n.w. of mouse.ice 6"-8". 4 of us 16 keepers 17"-25" lost several at top of the ice. caught quite a few small ones. There were quite a few people fishing. quads and snow mobiles running. the ice was really making noise (rumbled like thunder) in the am and quiet in the pm.The air boats running between Millers and S.Bass were traveling in water for approx. 200 yards where they broke thru. some shove ice.there were several small cracks on the way in that were not there in the morning. The bite for the most part wae very light, one tap then gone, you had to pay real close attention (tap -stick em)two of us had vexilars and had a big advantage on the light hitters.hot lures of the day green & white sonar, silver pimple with green tape one side.

Did great on saturday, fished all day and iced 90+ walleye. Ice was in the range of 6-8 in. there were 3 crackes working inside of mouse is area. alot of pushes. fished with #3&4 crockodile spoons. blue and chrome seem to produce the most fish but got fish on several others. black and chrome as well as blue and chrome rapalas prodeced many fish as well. i belive they are #5 not the biggest size but the next size down. heavy current all day but was still making ice throughout the day.
did o.k. on sunday (today) fished from 8-1. same holes 7-9 inches of ice. 30 walleye 1 jumbo perch. used same program as yesterday. very little current if any. there is another crack on the inside the other 3 closed up on the inside but are still there.
you will have to weed through the fish to get the keepers but it is fun and the larger fish are in there. out of the 120+ fish cought 50+ had to go back due to 15" min size. 1 @ 12lbs 2@ 9 2@ 8 1@7 rest were at the 3-6lb range. it was 2 great days of fishing after 2 months of cabin fever. Wow they taste great too!!!!

We went off millers. there was no vehicles off of the park at catawba, or people for that matter. Spoke with a friend last night who went to the same area. they did not see a fish caught or catch one themselves. the said the ice was good but again verry little if any current at all. good luck and we will see you on the weekend, hopefully.
