I recently bought a cabin on the lake and believe it or not I have never been on it. I fished almost exclusively on Mille Lacs the past 6 years. Anyone have any tips on where and how I should fish the walleye opener on Pokegama. Thanks

Are you sure there are walleyes in the lake?

You should talk to your brother-in-law. I've heard he is a
fantastic walleye angler!

Just trying to help. Enjoy the cabin.---

I don't fish it a lot but my wife is from Rapids and I fish it occasionally when visiting her family. I believe the walleye population is improving and fishing for them can be ok. The lake is also known for it's lake trout. There is a good smelt population which is what some of the walleye key in on as well for forage. I can't help for the opener (haven't fished early season there) but I know that trolling raps around the islands can be good for walleye in mid summer. It's a good bass lake, I've caught some nice large and smallmouths. There's also good sunfish in some areas of the lake.
When in the area, try some of the other area lakes for walleye like sugar (at night) or splithand which is known for more early season fishing. Of course a lot of people from rapids also drive up and hit Winnie and Bowstring for the opener.
Pokegama gets a lot of recreational use by speed boats, houseboats, jet skiis etc. in the peak of the summer. It's a beautiful area with very nice people though. Stop at Rapids Tackle for more info.

Jst another quick note. Pokegama is very clear, and deep. On the western end is Jay Gould, and from there you can run up the Mississippi past Cohasset. This is some great largemouth country, especially in the fall.
I think the lake is a little to deep and clear to be going very good on the opener.

Take care, T

How can you buy a cabin on a lake you have never been on? You got lucky , this Pokegama is an OK fishing lake. Pull Raps around the islands and you will do OK. Don't forget about Winnie and Leech that ar eonly 50 miles away.
