Fished west of sputnick on Sat, Sun and a bit today. Pulled 22 on Sat, our two man ticket on Sun, and just two fish today (it was rough on the lake so we only made 1 pass).
It seemed like the junk fish got progressively worse as the weekend went by: 5 junk fish for one keeper on Sat, 15 junk fish for one keeper on Sun, and even worse today.
Jet 40's running at 22-27 ft down (I don’t want to quote feet back due to line counter variation) and dipsys in the same region. Hot spoons were lamicakes and light days.
I want to apologize to a gentleman in a 25ft Baha Cruiser. On Sat my kicker stalled out while we were passing in front of him thus we cut him off. Sorry about that.

Jerry, Just wondering if you or Ladybridge or Dt.Dan tried working the waters that I fished on Wed.? Didn't make it out this weekend due to prior obligations. Also apoligies to that Gun Lake WALLEYE CHASER for not making it out this last weekend. You guys are always in my thoughts and prayers.

ERIE REBEL, No neither of us worked those waters. In hindsight it may have been a good option. Fish may still be in that area, I just don’t know with the warmer water temps.
eyecatcher2, Sputnick is a big red and white tower that marks the end of the Toledo Shipping Channel. Some call it the turnaround but I dont want to start that debate. Trust me it can get heated. Whatever you want to call it, it is big red and white and makes a noise like an elevator arriving at a floor - ding.....ding....ding

There was a large pack of boats there over the weekend. We had been fishing just west of the bouy for a while and doing pretty well.
Saturday we dropped lines at about 8:30 around the next set of bouys closer to Toledo and worked toward the island. We got 3 in the first 15 mins. Should have circled around but didn't, proceeded closer to WS. Didn't put the next eye in the boat until 10:30 when we made it back closer to where we started. (from the shipping channel south 2 miles). We picked up 15 more by 1.
Sunday we went right back to the same area and filled out limits before noon. We were west of the pack of boats which was more directly south of Sputnik each day. Didn't have to contend with any other boats.
Spoons off jet 20's about 80 back running about 2.5mph was our program. Mixed Veggies seemed to be our best spoon.

Joe,
I am disappointed that you didn’t chime in on the turnaround versus sputnick issue. I thought for sure that you would take the opportunity!!

I know where I'm going out there and the freighters don't turn at the Sputnik. LOL
You know how Sputnik and MacDonalds got named? I may have told ya.

Where do they turn?

The freighters turn between Detroit and Toledo at the next bouy out. It is a single red bouy about a mile further down the channel toward Middle Sister, looks like a needle not like the rest of the channel markers. It is the last bouy for the Maumee channel on a nautical chart. They turn there between the Detroit and Maumee. If you look at the map of the Toledo shipping channel on Dean's website it is the bouy past the sputnik. It also shows a jog in the channel there which heads to Detroit.

why is the McDonald's call that McDonald's?
They put it there while I was in College (early 90s).
You can imagine what it takes to put up a structure like that in 27 FOW. There was an enourmous platform and erector set out there. The joke on the VHF was that they were building a McDonalds out there. Obviously it stuck.
I remember it being called the Platform for a while actually. You don't hear that much anymore though.
At least that is my recollection of how it got named.

Anyone have pictures of these buoys? I thought Sputnik was the tall needle, guess I've been wrong all this time.

Where is McDonalds located? Thanks
It is a green bouy located between the Toledo Lighthouse and the Sputnik (closer to the Sputnik end). Similar in size and structure to the Sputnik.

Thanks J9F for the reply. I'm hoping to take the family out this Thursday for our first trip to Erie this summer for eyes. Might be trying out by bouy E (Bolles Harbor)or the Bannana Dyke area. Any suggestions? I myself been fishing mostly in LSC for perch this spring. We did get into some eyes this weekend in the middle channel. I will post my results if we make it out.
