Looking for a little advice here, Just found out that my lower cylander on my 1996 johnson 40 hp motor is scoured. Dealer says that I should look at having it bored out. Anyone have an idea on what kind of money I would be looking at? He said something in the neighborhood of 1200-1500 bucks? That sound about right to any of you? Another thought was that I might just trade it in on a new motor. Was looking at the Mercury 3 cylander (50 hp). Like my johnson but just looking for some input. Also thought about the 50 Honda? Any input is appreciated.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-01 AT 04:55PM (CST)[p]Depending on the score depth/extent, the motor style and the type of cylinder, over boring is the easiest. You should be able to get it done around $200-300, NOT $1500. Look for a second opinion!

If this motor has chromed steel sleeves, they should be able to pull and re-sleeve. But I think the '96 had aluminum heads and blocks.

Either way, you will have to put in a new piston, rings and needle bearings as well as some gasket kits. (Again, this depends on the motor) While the unit is apart, have them check the other jugs to see if wear or damage has occured. None of this is near $1200-$1500.

Did the shop give you any indication as to why the wall is scored? Did the piston shatter? Did the ring lock up? You need to know in the event you fix the wall, but not the cause. It will put you right back in the shop.

Let me know where you are from. I have a great mechanic that could do this for that $200-300.

$1200 to $1500!!! Sounds like that dealer should change the name of the business to Ripoff City Marine. What's your location? If we knew someone on the board might be able to help you locate a reputable repair shop.

There aint any way a guy is going to take the power head apart
bore the cylinder and put it back together with a oversize piston for $200 or $300 bucks.
Your looking at about 6 to 8 hours labor alone.
Aparenly the guy's above have never preformed this task.
With parts an labor your looking at a grand Minium.

Sorry Eye Guy but I do the wrench work myself. The only thing I would pay for is the boring, honing, and parts. The same might be true for Aquaman. If you can't find a good repair shop that doesn't charge less for labor than a dealership you are correct. However there is a shop near where I live that does better work than the local dealers for less money.

I apoligize for my sarcasim. BD and Aquaman.
Had one bad night.(allthough that is no excuse)
But it did not seam the guy wants to preform his own work.
A good dealer will charge $1000 minium for the job.
6 to 8 hours labor.
Power head seal kit.
2 over sized pistons.
The bill for boreing and honing the block.
Shop supplies.
It all adds up.
Have a great day.
Think spring.

I have done many motors myself and have had several done for me. You see I used to buy blown motors and fix them for resale. Additionally, my brother-in-law owns a machine shop in Perham, MN and we have done several of these together. On a 40HP, ONE piston = $200-$300, $450 on the OUTSIDE!

I've done it, I know!

Cool. I've had my share of those!

As the other post pointed out, I do some of my own stuff, but I have also taken my stuff to several good machine shops to get work done and have never paid more then $300 for the job listed above. Granted this was 2 years ago, but I think with a little finger walking, anyone could find a good shop and get that close.
