i'm thinking about a new moter for my targa.i have a 75 merc on it now.it runs at 40.6 mph gps reading.the dealer tells me it shuts down 2 cyl at trolling speed.the 115 that is.and is a very good trolling moter for salmon and walleye.i don't run a kicker moter but run elect when eyes are shallow.any info pros or con would be a great help.he also said i should get about 50 mph.thanks for any info.be safe and good fishing GLEN.
I have a 115 merc on a 17' Mr Pike. Never got a gps speed. speedo and Lowrance show 45-50mph dependent on load etc. It seems to troll ok. A bit fast. I have to trim up a ways to get 1.5mph. I have a 21 pitch prop. Check the archives for more input, I asked this in May or June last year. I would like a 9.9 4 stroke for this year but remodeling the house may set that back one year. I trolled several times last year seems fine many say they troll all day with no prob. This year downriggers will be on so I plan on using it for trolling much more. Maybe drop a sock off of bow eye to slow it down a bit. It never ran poorly after several hours of trolling. No smoke, very quiet. If I have to troll with it this year I will switch to synthetic oil and premium fuel, many posts say they run better on premium. P>S what speed is average for Salmon on L.M.?

As far as trolling speed on lake mich. 2.1 to 4.0 depending on what lures, water temp and how active the fish are.

Even two downrigger bombs will also slow the trolling speed. Best bet, however, is a trolling backplate -- that way rpms can be kept a bit higher than idle.
Thanks for speed info. Never even gave it a thought about the drag of the riggers etc. I trolled with just long lines and dipsies last year.
