Made the trip to Lorain today with Bill (repo) and had a great time. Went 5 for 10 on the Steelies and got an accidental Walleye in the group. We put lines in the water 11 miles out, straight north of Hotwaters and didn't get into anything until we were about 14-15 miles out (n n/e from hotwaters). 9 out of the 10 fish came on the downriggers (the 10 total doesn't count the 2 downriggers that released with nothing there) and every one but the last one came at 44 down with a 10lb ball. The last one came when we starting pulling lines for the day at 35 down. Jelly Bean was the color that caught the majority of the fish. The only other spoon that did anything was a white crushed ice Pro King on the downrigger, 44 down and it caught one. A magnum Orangasm caught one on the downrigger also. Ot of 10 steelies, 8 were on the jelly bean. I think the 4 dipseys I ran at every depth possible are junk! Then again, I run different colors on my dipseys. For the guys that were catching them off the dipseys, what color were you using? All in all, great day for fishing, great company for someone I just met at the dock (I drove from Toledo) and great weather. Will be heading back tomorrow to the same area. I will give a yell on channel 79 about 800 am when I start to head out. Let me know if the fish have moved please and I will let you guys know if I find them. See you guys on the water!
I go by Falcon2082 on the radio until I can get the boat named.

Falcon

Sounds like you guys had a descent day. I want to try for some steelhead this year , never tried before. Is lorain the best place to go out of? and how far will I have to go. I dont like going out much more than 7 to 8 miles as i'm often alone.

I normally fish out of the western basin for walleye and have had descent success, up until my last trip only 3 keepers. I think I'll try the central for walleye next trip.

Cheers,
WollyPop

I also fish the West Basin (live in Toledo). This is the first time I made the trip to Lorain for Steelies. I went to Lorain because the fish seemed to be a bit east yet. At least that is what I have been reading. If/when they start moveing more west, I would put the boat in from a Vermilion ramp. I would rather drive the miles, then boat them. As for how far out, we finished 15 miles out today. I do not know how close they come in, so maybe someone else would have that info for you. Next weekend is tied up for me, but maybe we can hook up some time. Well need to jump in the shower to get out of here. Hope the steelies are still there!

Hi,
You did good. They are not in thick out there yet.We went 4 for 5 with one about 14lbs and 4 Walleyes. As far as the Dipsys I painted some of mine Black and I also use the clear ones with the glow ring.I think we may have been near you as I heard you talking about the jellybean spoon. We had no hits on the riggers.

May I be fishing somewhere Tomorrow

That was me Marc. The fishlander jelly bean was the answer for us yesterday. I ended up shortening my leads on the riggers from 20 ft or so to 10 ft and that worked. The dipseys I was running all have some color of crushed tape and boy were they worthless. I only had the clears in size 0. I picked up two clear dipsey's this morning and they started to work. Went 3 for 7 today in the same exact area as yesterday. They turned on for about two hours or so and that was is. The shorter leads on the riggers seemed to be working for most people and we were picking them on dipseys with rings running around 40 ft down or so (70 and 90 ft back). Lost one bullet on the downrigger cable. I hope someone will let me know if they catch one with a ruby red Dreamweaver in its lip! What is funny, is that I was more ticked about the ball bearing swivel (man, are they expensive). What was funny today is that the jelly bean got hit early on a dipsey (no hook up) and that was it for that lure. Spoons with crushed ice tape (no particular color) seemed to be prefered. The fished shut down and I pulled lines at 200 for the drive back to Toledo. I a lot of fun this weekend with Bill (repo) and I we both learned a lot.
I would have to get back to the boat for the GPS numbers, but what I can remember, we were at the 41,10 and 82,? something. I really can't remember. But just go strait north of hotwaters for 15 miles. The depth was about 63 ft. Well thanks again for everyone that helped out with the info. It was really nice hearing people talking about what is working for them. Believe it or not, there is more then enough fish for all of us out there and it is always nice when you can help someone catch a few fish when they haven't found the ticket. Thanks again for all your help.

We went out of Avon to the 59-00 line and went 5 for 5 on steelies and got one nice eye in the mix. 4 steelies came on dipseys and one on downrigger, one was 29 1/2". About 11am they shut down and we quit about 2 or so.

On Sunday, I fished the 42/00 line and went 5 for 10. Caught some high fish early in the day, and then deeper later. High fish hit the small dipsy back 100, and later the big dipsy back 100-110. Cat/dog was the best color Not much bait in this area, and only about 8-10 boats working the line. Last July 4 the steelie bite was hotter, but maybe its early. Also, caught three eyes fishing for steelies (one 8lber), which is better than when I've walleye fishing some days.

Marc, didn't know you were out...or would have compared notes with you today.

Hi Hawkeye.
We went 4for5 on the Steelies on Sunday. Not a great day but if we were in Lake Michigan or Lake Huron it would have been a great day.I was trying every thing in the box and some named Haweye told Cat&Dog was a good lure and sure enough I caught my next 2 fish on it.1 I think went around 14 lbs.I couldn't find my scale to weigh it.Thanks Hawkeye.

Hi Falcon,
I think we were in the same area as you Sunday.I didn't do any good on Riggers as I was Running leads of 40 to 50 ft.Every time you go there they want it different.I heard you on the Radio and never thought to ask how far back of the riggers you were running. The Thermocline was from 40 to 55 ft.Tem difference was 76 to 48 deg.The Steelhead were at 40 ft and the Walleyes below them.

Hawkeye,

Saturday I fished out of Lorain on the Skunk Ape. We were met with some rough conditions. We hesitated heading out but then decided to make a slow and wet ride out to the 40 -12 spot. We stayed around the 40 -12 to 40 - 2 area. We were one for 2 on steelhead. Could have used some help out there. We were thinking of going back on monday but decided to stay with the walleye's here in the western basin. I thought I had found a nice pocket of walleye on sunday but when I took the guys out on monday the walleye had all shrunk.

Keep the reports coming. I'm sure we will head back to Lorain soon.

Lady Bridge, I did a U-turn in the harbor on Saturday. A bit too rough for my smaller boat. On the post above, I meant to type that I was 5/10 on Monday. Today seemed like Monday with the Holiday. Hopefully, the steelies will really turn on this coming week. I'll be out next Saturday/Sunday for sure. Keep in touch.

I tend to agree with Repo. Even though getting a limit is not my priority, I do like to get out and catch a few fish every now and then. I think the point of it was that even though we caught less fish on Monday then Sunday, it was so much more fun talking to different people and hear what was and wasn't working for everyone. Not everyone likes to operate this way, I understand. But it was just a whole lot of fun listening and talking to people you have never met. Thanks again, and maybe I will "see" everyone out there one day this weekend.

Marc, my fishing buddy The Optimist will be out tomorrow...wish I could go. Holler at him on the radio if you want. He is going to start at the 41/42 to 9/10 line. He was with my last year several times when we spoke. Hope you really get into the bullets !!!!!

Been fishing for steelies almost my whole life. For you guys who want to have fun ,wait till about the first week of October, go just in front of the vermilion breakwall and troll with an orange and gold KO Wobbler in the 1/4 or 1/2 oz.sizes.Just long line out the back with 6 or 8 lb test. The schools will look like a finger sticking up from the bottom, when you see that, mark it on your gps and hang on.Not uncommon to have 15-20 hookups in the morning, set your drags light and you'll land more than you can imagine.I know it's awhile to wait, but for the guys with small boats this is excellent.

Hi,
Well I said I would give Report.Started at the 42-00 line, about 5 or 6 boats around there. Some boats had 1 or 2 fish(steelheads). We started at between 8:30-9:00.Stayed in Area til around 12:30 No hits on Steelies, caught some small Walleyes,1 keeper.Trolled west to the 40-10 line.No hits on way there and no hits while there.Pulled lines at 3:30 with a big fat Steelhead Skunk.Morning Breeze turned into Big Winds.Tried all depths with Riggers and Dipsys.Everyone out there was trying to get something going but it just wasn't to be.
