WALLEYE EYES

I have been making jigs for a few years now and was wondering how important it is to paint eyes on the jig? We use these jigs in Canada in late May. Some fishing web sites said it was not important, but I have heard different. What colors should be used with what? I have found that a yellow eye tends to catch more northern. Does anybody have the answer?

I like to use a cotton Q-TIP and use flour. red/orange paint. Then I use a nail head in some black paint for the pupil.

My local tackle store sells decals/stick on reflective tape for lures along with stick on eyes in different sizes. I have added some small stick on eyes to jigs, but am not sure if the fish like the looks as much as I do....

Basically, the eyes on jigs are to catch the fisherman, not the fish. I have had just as good, and better, luck on jigs without eyes vs jigs with eyes. That is my opinion. So, if you don't want to take the time to do it, I don't think it is neccessary.

It's like the story of the boxer who always said a prayer before every match. Finally, one day, someones asks "Does praying really help a boxer?" Someone else answered: "Yeah, as long as he can punch." The moral of the story: If YOU think painting eyes on jigs will help, then they will help. Confidence in your tackle and methods are the most important factors to success. Do what you have to do to build and maintain that confidence.
