Hope someone can help me out!!! I am taking 2 of my buddies up there this weekend, 818-8/21 and am hoping to put them on some fish. I have never been that far north, (except Canada a couple times) but am very optimistic... We are camping at Bear Head, and I can't wait to see what "up north Minnesota" really means.

I sure would appreciate any help on this- Walleye would taste great on one of the nights...

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I know Vermilion, but I am not familiar w/ Bear Head campground. Is that actually on Vermilion? What part?

It is a campground about 10-15 minutes south and east. We are on a smaller lake (Bear Head Lake), but I thought as long as I am in the area, I should try out a lake that I have heard nothing but good reports about. It looks like Hwy 128, about 1/2 way between Vermillion and Babbitt. I would probably want to put in on the South East side if possible. I have a 17 ft smokercraft with 60 horses pushing me. 3 people in the boat, so if possible, I would prefer to stay off the main lake if the wind comes up.

Any launch points (Struntz bay?), GPS points, or ANYTHING else you can give me would really be appreciated!!

Thanks for replying so quickly!

Summer time on Vermilion can be tough mid day, so if you are trailering, get an early start or go late enough so that you can stay until after dark.

You probably want to stick to the East side and fish exclusively in Big Bay. It is full of islands and reefs, but is not really that deep (30' for most of it).

My advice if you havent been out there before is to fish the reef that is at the end of the 3 islands that run east/west w/ Potato being the furthest west. The north/south line runs from a gazebo w/ a white top (hard to miss) on the corner of Caufield Bay.

The reef is about 100 yards long and tops out in 12-15 FOW. It is on maps, so it is not a secret or hard to find.

After that, just poke around and hit humps that top out on 17-22 FOW around Big Bay. There are a ton, so dont worry if you dont see boats on one. A lot of the points near deeper water are decent too, but I would stick to the big water if you can handle it.
