I am looking at purchasing the GARMIN 168 GPS Sounder combo unit.Looks like a good unit for the price. Does anyone have any thoughts on this unit? Thanks

Probably one of the bigger advantages is the new Garmin MapSource Fishing Hot Spots map data that's available. Both the 162 & 168 models can use it.
Lake contours, fishing information, lake profile, (on the unit!) logging capabilities and waypoint marking on your PC are all there.
I have one in my office (will go in the boat when it comes) and the resolution is great, it's got a decent light, power and nice sized screen.

Were do you get the mapsource hotspots maps. Garmin doesn't seem to list them with their other mapsource maps.

The MapSource Fishing Hot Spots release is brand new, like within a week or so, so it may just now be showing up in stores. Gander has the CD's for other applications, but I was in the Wausau, WI store yesterday and didn't see the FHS version yet.

One of my sponsors just got notice that it may be a few weeks or so before these maps are released, but was able to get a list of lakes on our local CD. Frankly, I was a little disappointed; it only listed about 6 lakes, and not the most popular ones either. We were seriously considering this unit for ourselves, but not if thats all we get for maps. Otherwise this looks to be an excellent little unit.

WG...
The lakes you've heard about are only the first pass. Garmin has told us there will be many more coming shortly. Keep in mind all these companies are learning here, and seletions will be small at first since a lot of effort has to go into converting all that data into something you guys can use. The memory capacity of the electronics limit things a lot when some of the actual lake files are huge.
On the upside, they've licensed our entire database so you know there's a lot of good stuff in there! Like the rest of us, be patient. If you haven't seen the program yet, it's well worth waiting for!
