I NEED A NEW ROD
I WANT A 7 FOOT CASTING ROD IN HEAVY OR MED.HEAVY, FOR A VARITY OF FISHING INCLUDING FLATLINE TROLLING. MY BUD HAS A G LOMMIS IMX THAT I LOVE BUT CANT AFFORD A $250 ROD. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BEST ROD
THANKS.
P.S. ARE BASSPRO BAITCASTING REELS ANY GOOD?

I have several different types and styles of BassPro's/Walleye Angler rods and I think their the best buy for the a hard earned dollar there is. If you can't afford the others and you need a darn good quaility rod check out the Bass Pro's spring catalog, the Walleye Angler rods are all $59.99....

If you have looked at the others and can't tell the differance - order one of those Cabelas rods in IM6 or IM7 in the size you want. I have never had the pleasure of owning a Loomis but do consider my Cabelas rods to be VERY good... especially good for the money.

I had a guy in my boat last year that had "the cats ##### Loomis" and I caught 4-1 on my Cabelas. Most of it is in your feel and know how - not how much $$$. I'm sure this is differant for the pros and/or the guys that fish several times a week but for my money the $50-100 rods with the Cabelas stamp are more than adequate.

Kind of like the pool table. You can own a $3000 Meucci stick and get beat by a guy with a bar stick, if he can shoot a little better.

I have quite a few different rods too. I agree with lobo on the Cabela's rods. But I don't think you will find a 7' in the IM6 or 7 series (at least not a one piece). For the money though, I think you get a lot of value.

I also own one G-Loomis and don't plan on spending that much money again on a rod. The top guide frays mono when I crankbait with it, has from the day I got it. I can't do anything to repair the burr short of changing out the guide. Something I would rather not do to a $225 rod.

I have both HMX and HMG Fenwicks and would highly recommend the HMG series. My opinion is that the HMG beats the HMX by a ton. The price is near the range you mentioned.

Personnaly, I will keep buying the Cabela's rods if they have the size/model I want and get HMG's to fill in the holes.

Another great place to pick a decent rod is Fishermans Factory Outlet. (www.ffo-tackle.com) I picked up a couple Fenwick Rods in the past at outstanding prices. Good Luck, BarryM

Cabela's has a PWT Combo with a Pinnacle reel. 7' MH action IM7
for $49.98 each. I haven't used it yet but the feel and action suggest it will be a good performer. I got two of them and I am thoroughly impressed. Cabela's Spring Catalog.
Good Luck!

Zeek,
For heavens sake - get that guide fixed.
If you don't want to do it yourself or have a rod shop do it - take it back to any Loomis dealer - and exchange the rod for a new one.

Most of the Loomis dealers - will stand behind their rods - and simply give you a new one - if there is any questions at all.

However, on the Loomis especially - because they simply use buffed graphite for their finish - changing out a guide is only a few minutes of work. Then reapplying thread coating and letting dry overnight.

There is no reason to put up with a bad guide on any rod -- after all - this guide might cost you the fish of a life time.

I have totally several Loomis rods - and put on different handles and guides. It really is not a big deal - if someone knows what he/she are doing.

You don't say where you are located -- but most cities where fishermen are located - have some access to a custom rod shop.

Take care and enjoy.

Berkley's Series One rods are nice rods for the money. Pretty readily available too.

I really like the Bass Pro Extreme rods for $100. They are sensitive, fairly light and come with the Fuji hardloy guides. They have several combos that include this rod so you can save around $50 if you go this route.

I would take a look at HOOKHIDER Fishing rods, they have IM6 and IM 8 for very reasonable pricing. Cabelas now carries them.
