I'm thinking of doing some long line and deep trolling. In response to questions on line counter reels before, the Diawa SG27LC seemed to get a lot of recommendations. It holds 210 yards of 20# line. I would probably use something like 10# mono to match Precision Trolling, or possibly Power Pro 20/6 to get deeper. Since this isn't for casting, can you just underfill the spool, or is there a reason to put on a layer of backing, like the amount of line it will retrieve on one turn of the handle? While we're at it, is there a rod you would recommend, or are the combinations in Bass Pro adequate for the job? Thanks.

I believe that the line counter will be more accurate if you max out the spool. Also if you use PowerPro, you will need some sort of a backing to prevent slippage. I use a light action muskie rod on my trolling setup, just because I wasn't using it much for muskies, it seems to work fine though, I wouldn't be too picky on the rod.

Also, if you don't fill the spool you won't retrieve as much line with each turn of the handle.

Check it out sometime, If you don't have your real full you could be at a totally different depth than you think. I measure out 100 ft in my yard, then pull that much line off of my real, then look at the number on the counter. There is a difference.

I see Cabelas has line counter reels that you can choose your lb test line you run for the counter......but ...won't you STILL have the same inaccurate reading if the spools not full or you have a ton of line out.......or does the computer chip compensate for the difference ??...Just wondering???? I found several Cabela's linecounter reels, but not one where you could dial in the weight of the line you are using. Can you tell me in which catalog on what page? Thanks.

Ron,
I bought several of the daiwa27 combo's from bass pro a few years back. I got the "Gold Cup" rods with them and love 'em!
Dont know much about the "power Pro " rods that they offer with these reels.

Ron, I run 6/20 PowerPro on my Diawa 27 line counters. I put a wrap of surgical tape on the spool and then fill it with a 330 yd. filler spool of PowerPro. It's a bit pricey, but the stuff is great and lasts a long time. Plus, you can reverse it after a season or two and you have a fresh spool! Good Fishing, Sluggo

I bought 4 of Walleye Angler Signature Series by Parsons/Kavajecz out of Bass Pro Model #WA76T-T for inline planer boards. I like them alot and inexpensive at 59.99/ea. For reels I use the Diawa 47LC. Handles dem big Erie 'eyes with no problem.

The Cabelas model where you can select the line weight is their digital model. This reel has recently be redesigned by Cabelas due to numerous problems associated with the old model. The old model has been bashed pretty hard in pior posts on this topic. I owned one and replaced it with the Diawa. I think you would be better off to spend your money elsewhere.
