Is the ice fishing at Lake Simcoe worth a 7 hr. drive?

It depends......

With the warm weather they are really only fishing cooks bay right now so Perch,Pike and blue gills are your only options. Unless we get some cold weather the main lake won't freeze which means no lakers or White fish.

The traffic on cooks is heavy right know so they are only maaging about 100 perch a day with only a dozen or so over 12" the majority are 8" to 10".

I have been meaning to drive over and fish for the afternoon but just haven't made it yet.

More questions: if you live local (or to anyone whom fish`s there regularly).
Three buddies and I are considering a run up that way in a few weeks.None of us have ever fished simcoe. The stories I have heard and pictures I have seen are enough to make me think its worth the long drive from n/west ohio!
I`m sure we would be happy with the perch/panfish bite.
Are there good places to walk out and fish perch? Is a guide worth the $$?We have considered one for at least the first day.
We are all fairly good at both finding and catching fish here in ohio but I realize its a whole new game up there in ontario. We do have all the neccesary gear to go it alone though (shanty`s/p.auger/rods,reels/flashers/u`water camera`s/etc)
Are there bait shops good at giving up to date info on hot bites? And lastly are rooms/motels/meals readily available and reasonably priced near the good fishing area`s?.Is a passport neccesary yet to travel into and out of canada?Whats a fishing license cost this year~or daily?.....Thanks so much for any help...FISH HARD!...Wahoo

Type in Fishing Lake Simcoe and search, then go to the message board. There are lots of good reports. I went there 2 yrs. ago and used Whitey,@ Lake Simcoe Fishing Adventures,we paid for a shanty and transportation and brought our own gear.Three of us caught over 200 perch in one day and kept our limit of 50 each.It took about 11 hrs.to get there from Cleve.Oh. but the weather was very bad.If you go,remeber that fishing trips are for good memories,if you only want fish save yourself alot of money and just buy some.We had a great time.
