Went perch fishing this afternoon. Took awhile to locate some. Got our limit at Marblehead where the freighters load up with stone and between the Kelleys Island ferry docks. Crappie rigs and minnows. Didn't get out till 1:30p and found them around 3:00p. Lots of nice sized perch!!!!!!!

sounds good, i was hoping those fish would be back in that area soon. The early perch bite out there is the best perch fishing all year. How deep were you fishing?

Thanks for the early report. Will finish work on boat in next couple days. Maybe Thursday head for lake.

Does anyone ever perch using anything other than minnows/shiners? Lookin for alternatives for when I cannot find bait.

I have caught perch on about everything I've caught walleye with. I've found some good perch spots draggin for walleye. The preferred choice is a hook an shiner. Spreaders or crappie rigs, personal preference. Sometime's when it gets real fast I like to use a piece of nite-crawer. It just helps from rebaiting so often. Isn't 100%, but I'd say at least 80%.

I have also used nite crawlers on perch.Same hook/weight set up as with minnows but instead try a one inch piece of crawler....Wildcat

Greetings,

I've been trying to do some research regarding Perch fishing. It seems that over the last few years (maybe longer), the Perch fishing is very good in the Marblehead to the Southeast Corner of Kelley's area. Sometimes off the Lighthouse, sometimes as tight in as 75 yards from shore. Sometimes they are off the new condo's on the east end of Marblehead. The peak seems to run from now until the end of April with peaks and valleys related to the spawn.

I am not real familiar with the Marblehead area. I just don't usually fish that far east. I put in at Mazurik and if I head east I head towards Kelly's and north. Are there GPS points that anyone might be able to share of general area's we are talking about? I may do some mid-week fishing and the packs might not be available to help me locate them. If no GPS points, then visual landmarks.

I here people talking about the ferry route too.

Any additional advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Mike

Coach; You just described the perfect game plane. I would go with it. Don't set to long any where without a bite. They are there somewhere.

Fished Sunday afternoon. Brisk NE wind brought some pretty good waves. Fished 31' of water directly out from Mablehead Lighthouse. Two guys took home 38 nice Perch. Released several shorts. First time I have ever caught perch in that rough of water. Perch we took have not spawned. Bumpy fishing, but not a horrible day. Fished for about 3 hours.
