Hey steve. I do NOT jump off bridges!! No way I would do that. Those people are crazy! Should those saugers be hitting good now?I was planning on fishing Racine locks. Thats above Ravenswood. Are you famlier with the ohio? Is this a good time to fish for the saugers? Or stripers?

Isn't Beckley a long way from the Ohio River? You must really want to catch those Saugers! There is a blurb in this months issue of the Walleye In-Sider magazine that says the Ohio is a good sauger fishery from around St.Louis all the way up to around Pennsylvania. Yes, now and for the next few weeks is prime time right below dams and a couple mile stretch below. Once the water reaches high 40's, I think the fish start to disperse down river.
If you don't already do it, probably the coolest way to prospect is to pull three way rigs. I like to use 2-10 fireline for the main line down to the three way swivel. The small diameter cuts the current. Off the lower leg of the 3-way, tie a 14" +/- dropper and tie on a large enough jig to get you down straight below the boat - even in heavy current. This may require between a 3/8's up to 1.5 oz jig. Lindy fuzzy grub jumbo jigs or Jack's work well. Tip it with a large fathead minnow. Off the other leg of the three way, tie a 2-3' trailer(shorter in real snaggy areas). I tie on a tiny slo-poke jig in bright orange or green and stick a fathead on that too.
You use your trolling motor to move around - lifting and dropping this rig just off the bottom. If you feel any weight - stick 'em.
Be prepared for snags. I typically rig 4 rods this way so if I break off, I drop that rod and pick up the next. If you don't have a trolling motor, anchor or shore fish by the eddies near shore just below the dam. Pitch jigs into the slack water and work 'em back.
Ted Takasaki's video - Trophy Walleye Tactics - goes into good detail on pulling three ways in rivers - plus it gives locational info too.
I'd love to try fishing down there!! I wish it wasn't so far away. I hope to try the Ohio at S.Illinois some day soon. Good luck.
