Have fished Lake Erie (W. Basin)on & off since 1989. As it is a 5.5 hour drive, don't make it every year, some years, make twice-mainly in spring. W/costs of gas, license, motel, bait, etc., its dicey, trailering that far & not knowing if the wind will keep us off the lake. Noticed last 5-6 years that the walleye bite seems to shut off like a light switch at 8am-9am. Is this common or are we dreaming? Not regulars or expert enough to really know. Maybe water clarity & good forage base allows buffett like pigouts before 9am, & then don't eat for a while. Fished 05/06 - 05/07/2006 - harnesses on boards, slow, all over (W of Islands & N of Rattlesnake) 3 fish each day - 1 7lb., 1 5 lb., rest good eaters. Only 2 fish caught after 9am.

WE KEEP OUT BOAT @ LUNA PIER. WE CALL FOR A WEATHER REPORT BEFORE LEAVING & THEY ARE VERY HELPFUL ABOUT CONDITIONS ETC.

We seem to be able to catch almost any time of the day. have thought about night fishing but everyone says WHY fight the bugs etc.
The charters leave around 7:00 and then again 1:00 so even they seem to catch all times of the day.
Hope this helps

try this site for wheather and fishing reports, westernbasinsportfishingassociation.com if you check the weather report the night before you leave, most of the time it is accurate, but 2 or 3 days beforehand is a crap shoot.

might even want to check the lake report right before you walk out the door.Came over to Erie Saturday from Indiana and checked the lake wave report before going to bed Friday night expecting 1-3 foot waves just to arrive early Saturday morning at Catabwa and be greeted by 3-5 foot waves. We did get out but not fun at all.But hey that is Erie fishing because that lake will turn and do what it wants in a split second.

DEFINATLY! THERE IS DEFINATLY A MORNING BITE!! Ive had days where i load 9 fish in the boat before 10am...Then there is a dry spell...However some days it never quits...If they do shut down I usually set the lines back deeper and it triggers a few more strikes and hopefully i have my limit...I just think they are alot more active in the mornings and still have the feed bag on...then they kinda drop down and just hit on reaction after that...

Ive had most of the hot times from like sunrise-10 or 11am then there seems to be an hour or so dry spell and then another surge around noon or 1pm...

You always gota geta jump on em...Usually i am setting rods at sunrise on Erie ALWAYS...Makes the need for that remote spotlight i have on my roof alot better...lol
