Hey BE, I just watched In-Fish catching some huge cats on your Red River in Manitoba. Looked like they were having a blast fighting those rolling cat sows up on the surface! They said cats in the Red average 15 to 20 lbs.? Thats unbelievable, you have quite a fishery in your backyard. One thing that got me going was that they were throwing jigs to catch them, now that would be fun!!! Anyway, I couldnt help but think about you when I was watching this. Rollin Cat Sows...YEEEEEHAAAAA!!!

Here I is!
I been up North catching sumo perch at Devils Lake this weekend, not a lot of them but man the ones I caught they be Somo piggy's!
The Red is awsome for cats, ya got to try it to really apreciate it.
I was flinging frogs on jigs and rigs at the dam in Canada last August. One 20 to 24 lb cat after the other. Over 1100 lbs in one day just myself, my partner that trip did just about as good. Wear ya out them piggy's will, yup-yup! Lot's of fun!
Don't bring you bass or walleye rods for cats in that current, they will snap like twigs.
I have a mess of perch to clean yet so gots to run.

So I need yet another new rod for this animal? I suppose a 7 ft. medium heavy casting rod with a new baitcasting reel? Kuh-Ching$...Kuh-Ching$. Here we go again, its always time to go shopping, I just love it! Maybe if I can get up your way sometime you can get me into some of these kittys? I watched yet another In-Fisherman show and they were catching Flatheads somewhere. The last fish didn't want to let go of Jim Linders hand when he released it....YIKES!
now we are talking about somthing i do know about. I love to catch them cats<<G> would like to love to catch walleye but you have to catch one before you can love them. anyway i talk to a guy on the catfish chat about 3-5 times aweek who guides for catfish on the red. all the stories about the large fish are true.if you all like catching cats i can give you a list of some good catfish sites or one that has a good chat about every night. dave

I think you seen Steve and Jim fishing for flatheads? They were fishing in southern Minn with John Lehto for cold water flatheads on jigs.
Flatheads do not have as much of a chomp and jaw pressure in comparison to a channel cat. A 30 lb. channel can crush your fingers, if you mess up were a flathead it will just give you a good pinch. Channel cat jaws are heavily muscled and are made to crunch prey in one crushing crunch. Flatheads just woof the bait whole and don't chew or crush.
Your rod choice is best in the 8-10 ft range in heavy to medium heavy E-Glass with a ABU 6500 C4 baitcaster or a 6500 Shimano Baitrunner real for spincast rods.
I use Pete Maina Signature series Musky rods for big flatheads because in warm water summer conditions as you need to pull them out of cover fast or your a goner.
Tons of fun and the toughest fighters around in lakes and rivers them cats are in my opinion.

that flats dont smash fingers the way the channels and blue do is because of their jaw placement. the flats have a slight over bite(or under never can rembner which it is) this allows you to lip them. I personally wouldnt use any rod over 8 ft for large cats unless casting a long distance was needed.E glass rods are the best in my oppinion. I use penn 109-209 reels for most of my catfishing. I like the price and durablity of a penn compared to a abu garcia. dave
sorry about that he is on the catfish chat.
