Heading out to Pierre this weekend, any hot spots for the big one? Wonder if the fish are moving south yet from Gettysburg. Anyone try the Cheyenne arm yet?

sdfishing, We were up at Whitlocks the weekend before last and there is a hot bite going on up there to Mobridge. I'm taking my dad and brother up to Pierre the weekend after this coming one and don't want to have to drive all the way to Whitlocks. Is the bite better up-river from Bushes, or down-river toward the Cheyenne? TIA

The bite is still better up river from Bushes right now but with this warm weather the bite at Bushes & south should be taking off anyday.

I agree, should be getting better down river from Bushes. 2 weeks ago we were driving up to Whitlocks and going down by Stove Crk and doing well. Your right... pain in the rear. Some guide friends of mine have been doing well in the Sutton Bay area. I am leaving tonight, fishing through Sun. We are just going to put in at bushes and work our way up to Sutton. Just go looking for them you'll find em!! See you on the water!

Also...I would think things would be getting good around Willow.

I will be leaving Sat night or early Sun and fishing till Wed afternoon, will give a report when we get back. Anyone been out of Cow Creek, thats where we are staying. Last year we were told you had to go up to Bush's to catch fish, we caught more and better quality not to far from the landing at cow creek and no one was there, lots of boats at bush's.

Gale, Good luck this weekend and I look forward to a successful report. We usually stay in Pierre and drive to where the best bite is within reason. Would be great if the fish are cooperating for you in the lower part of the lake.

We will be heading up to pierre on Sun as well. It would be
great if we didn't have to make the drive to Bush's and north.
Fished the lower end quite a few times and have done well
excpet for the last few years. We normally go a little later
into July but to get the trip in we had to go early.
Has anyone been fishing in the trailrace at night and if so
how is the bite? It's a fall back if you get blown off during the day.
we'll be back Friday, I'll post report.

Fished Fri, Sat, Sun. Went to Bushes Fri, ended up with 7 nice fish. Bite was a bit slow. Really windy Fri and Sat. Sat, put in at Sutton Bay, caught 12 nice fish straight across from the boat ramp. Sun, back to Suttons, caught 12 nice fish across from the boat ramp, and just down from the ramp on the rocks. All nice 16-22" fish. Lots of little fish moving in. I am fishing this weekend as well. I'm going to try going out of Cow on Fri. There is some fish being caught on the S. end of the lake but it's still spotty. Just have to find them.

sdfishing, thanks for the report. I'll be in Pierre to fish Friday thru Sunday. Was thinking of heading up to Bushes Friday, unless I hear of something better. I hope you do well as I have heard that Peoria Flats and Chantier are starting to produce some fish.

Bushes area still has really good fishing. I just want to try the lower end. Had a friend fish Peoria last weekend and one day they caught an easy limit and struggled the next, so still hit and miss. Had another friend go over to Deep, Snake and Agency and got a limit, but he said it wasn't easy. They did a lot of looking before they found a pod of fish. Fish were better quality than up north though. So, any day now that lower end will be getting better and better. By this weekend I should be able to find some down there. Good luck!

We fished Oahe on Sun afternoon, Mon, Tues, and Wed morning. Sunday we kept two fish and released numerous 14-15" fish in Willow Creek area. Monday we went out of Cow Creek till noon and caught one nice fish, went up to Bushs and kept 7 nice fish for the rest of the afternoon's effort. Tuesday we went directly up river to west shore across from Sutton's and kept 11 nice fish by noon. Overall the fishing was alot slower than previous years and lots of smaller fish, the big cold front before we got there probally didn't help.
Not like last year when we where catching limits in an hour or two, had to really search and work for our fish which i enjoy doing. Tuesday afternoon we went salmon fishing for a couple of hours, caught one fish at 9 1/2 pounds, talk about a fight, those things are crazy. Went salmon fishing Wed for a while before we left, caught one right at 6 pounds.

Fished Fri, Sat, Sun. Caught limits out of Cow each day. 3 people. Didn't hear about the capsized boat. Sun the wind howled, it was tougher but still found some fish.

Fished Fri, Sat & Sun last weekend. Four of us ended up with 9 fish Fri. in the Cheyenne River area, with a 21" and 23" and most others in the 18-19.5" range. Sat. 13 fish in the Sutton Bay area, with only one over 20" and generally smaller fish than the day before. Sun. fished 4 hours and only caught 3 fish, but all in the 20.5 - 21.5" range. All in all a good trip with my dad, brother and father - in-law, with some really quality fish caught and great weather.

Thanks for the report big fella - it appears it is getting to a typical Oahe spotty pattern with weather dependent fish. We fished hard on south Oahe with well known guides for 2 days and struggled to catch fish each day, yesterday and the day before. The fish are spreading out and starting to dive deep - alot of pressure puts fish down. The guides did not think the bite would be as good as it was at Whitlock and Mobridge earlier this year, but you may get on a bite for a few days. The hatch has happened and slowed the walleye bite down. We have heard of a really good bite going on in Eastern SD, we will let you know when we get there..
