What is the best way to sharpen your hooks? Tried a device that has to circular files side by side not to impresed.

Thanks,moreyes

There's no question the best penetrating point can be honed with a file. But, it takes time.

With 30 years experience on Lake Michigan running up to 10-12 rods, I got in the habit of using a product called Hook-Hone-R. It does a good job, but will make a conical shape point. The point "experts" contend you want a triangular point. But, if you're keeping dozens of spoons and lures fingernail-test sharp, go with a Hook-Hone-R.

P.S. The Hone-R runs on nicad batteries and is rechargeable -- can use for hours between charges (charge light on device).

If they're really dull, start with a small file. Many of the so called hook files seem to be intended for salt water anglers, they are too big for my little freshwater hooks. Visit your hardware store.
For a quick touch-up, an ignition file works wonders. See your auto parts store. Another option is one of those diamond-coated fingernail files from the cosmetics section in your drug store.
If you're obsessive about it, you can finalize the sharpening with a hone, I have a used cylinder hone from an engine overhaul shop. It works well for those midge flies I sometimes have to use. It was free.
In all cases, the direction of the tool is from the hook point toward the barb. The other direction will give a wire edge that worn't go away.

I second the ignition file. Nice size to handle and store in the tackle box. The teeth on this file are pretty fine which makes it easier to use than some of the other files marketed for sharpening hooks.

We also use the hook honer. Great little machine.
