I returned from the Whitlock area last Wednesday -- Aug. 2.
I fished below the dam at Pierre last Saturday night (July 29) without much success. I believe temps hit 110-plus there that afternoon.
The next day, Sunday, was to darn hot to do anything except stand in the water on a windblown point at Gettysburg and cast a jig until I got tired of doing that and returned to air conditioning.
Monday and Tuesday temperatures returned to the 80s, so I was back on the water. I finally found active fish Tuesday, and in mid-afternoon caught walleye suspended at 20 feet in 60-plus feet of water. Later I had a blast filling my four-fish limit pulling crankbaits across a point in 10 to 20 feet of water as the sun set.
I don't know about anything close to Pierre, but I'll bet you could catch some fish south of Gettysburg. There may be some decent activity on Sharpe, too. If you haven't already, check out: http://www.angelfire.com/sd/walleyizer/report.html
Good luck,

The website referred to here is an ok place to get some information but Andre' does not do nearly as good a job as his dad did when dad owned the guide service. Dad put weekly reports on the web site and was usually a little more specific than his son is now but is still a place to get some information...just not very current.

I was at the west bend area yesterday morning for two hours and caught two nice eyes, one over 20". I was pulling plugs as I had no live bait.(17ft) Looked like a lot of people on the flats live baiting, but didn't talk to any of them. Haven't heard of too much around Pierre. good luck

Isn't Greg his Dad? I thought he still guided? No? At least he did last year.

Greg is Andre's dad, and has retired from guiding on Oahe, according to information that has appeared on the website.

Not asking for specifics but what part of the state do you hunt grouse in and how does the population look this year. Didn't make it out grouse hunting last year and the year before, I heard the grouse population was way down so I didn't bother. I really enjoy hunting grouse in the National Grasslands (when it isn't crowded), especially Prairie Chickens. I have been hearing lately that the grouse population is way up in this part of the state (Grant County and NE Codington County) so I might have to give them a try since it is only a half tank of gas away or less. Only down side is there are no Chickens up there.

The grouse and chicken population in central SD last year was good, but this year I'm guessing the numbers will be down. The severe drought has turned the chicks into cripy critters, I'm afraid.
The chicks that didn't sizzle in the 117 degree heat a couple weeks ago (no, I'm not exagerating, it really got that hot here!) probably have been eaten by the predators, as the grass is virtually non-existant this year in the ungrazed fields. The grazed fields are dirt.
Maybe next year...pray for rain.
