Plan on being in the UP next week with family, and was wondering if someone could tell me if I have to travel out very far from Escanaba to get some decent walleyes...I have'nt fished up there in 25yrs, and that was ice fishing...Thanks...Tom

The walleye fishing has been excellent for the most part. Been a tough day or two here and there after a cold front, but over all very good. Right now, there are a ton of "eaters" near the Black Bottom area which is on the east side of the bay between Gladstone and Escanaba. And my wife I and found good numbers of eaters north of Gladstone as well just yesterday evening. But we did not find them until it was almost dark, and only ended up with three keepers before it got too dark. But there were plenty of fish none the less. If you try the Black Bottom area, a locally made spinner has been working the best. It's made by Walleye's Choice and has an item number of I-42. I-62 would be the 2nd pick. You will want to run them behind bottom bouncers off boards. If the weather has been stable for a couple days or had south winds, look for lots of fish to suspend in the Black Bottom area with some of them only down 10 feet in 40 feet of water. So make sure you try at least one line up high. Even if you are not seeing them up high on your graph as lots of times you will not see the high fish because of the boat spooking them before your transducer runs over them. If you want big fish, then you will have to fish outside the bay well south of Escanaba. My brother was out with Mark Martin yesterday while he prefishes for the up-coming PWT Tournament and they slaughtered some big fish with lots of them 24-28 inches. But for obvious reasons, I can't tell you where they were fishing until after the tournament which is August 23rd,24th, and 25th. After that, I can then let the cat out of the bag...
