I was last on Oahe at Gettysburg the first part of August, and wondered which boat ramps in that area are still usable.

And yes, I'm curious whether fish are being caught in that area, too.

Thnx in advance,

The 1804/212 Bridge Ramp was usable last I heard. North Whitlocks it open. I haven't heard how the fishing is.

I know two groups that were there labor day weekend, and they both said the fishing was poor.

It's better towards the lower part of the lake this time of year, till the water cools into the 50's or so. All summer long the smelt gradually migrate south, and the walleyes tend to follow them. At least the active ones do, in my experience anyway.

you aint goin to find a walleye within 15 miles of gettysburg this time of year - salmon are trying to spawn, i'll tell ya one thing i no, the eye does not like the salmon, time to shoot birds. fishin will be good next year if we have a tough winter, if not - you might as well pack it up fellas.

This time of year the bite starts again up north. When Mobridge starts to go Akaska will also. In the fall I most always go north and have good luck.

Everyone talks about the fall bite on Oahe. Why is it I have NEVER hit this "hot bite"? I go every year....various times during the fall....and never do anything.

What part of the lake are you fishing? What time have you been here?

I'm thinking it's still a little early for the "fall bite." Last year, we hit the points around the mouth of the Moreau around the end of October and first part of November and smacked a lot of nice fish.

good question - alot of hype surrounds fall bite. Actually the "fall bite" is a biological process in species that spawn in risng water temps, such as the walleye. The development of eggs in the female begins at a certain temperture that the water reaches in the down cycle, mainly it is time of year between November and December. On a big body of water such as Oahe, it will be different depending on what part of the lake your fishing. And usually it is enhanced due to limited baitfish, however the current shad population in Oahe is very good.

That's not true, many times I've caught salmon in the summer and fall while trolling for and catching walleyes on both sakakawea and oahe.

yea, you are prbably right baloney, my 35 years of guiding out of Whitlock does not mean didly doo next to your experience for trolling for salmon. If you knew what you were talking about I would spend the time to educate you but it is clearly not worth the effort. If you were getting ready to mate would you want your neighbor looking in the window...no you keep them out......Rookies......

TRAPP: why will fishing be good next year if we have a bad winter?

The Fall bite used to be incredible in the Moroeau(sp)river south of Mobridge, and the Cheyenne River. What happened to that bite? I'm not sure but I've been fishing the system for 20yrs. I think the water levels have something to do with it...but the fish should still show up there. But... it's been tough since the water went down. Any thoughts?

my guess would be that a good hard old fashioned south dakota winter will kill more shad, therefore creating less bait in the system come spring time, from my limited experience on the lake from the dam to Mobridge, there is no shortage of forage. i spent about 15 days on Oahe last summer and marked lots of bait and walleyes, most of the time too much bait, but the walleye population will be booming for years to come. this is just a matter of opinion

We are crushing the eyes right now. All I can say is vertical jigging. We boated well over 300 walleyes in the last month .

I love it when someone acts like they know what their talking about when they have to quote another persons intelligance to appear authoritarian. If you cannot come up with an orignal thought on your own, then be silent, please!!!

Another thread that started good and ended with to little baby's arguing.

there is no arguing here. what I hate to see is overhype that brings people away from work and spending hundreds of dollars on gas and lodging when their is little chance of catching fish. Everybody has to make a lving

Limits are easy most often right after spawn. The fall and spring bite are always a hit and miss deal.

Here are the latest reports from the Mobridge area.

Lake Oahe Fishing Report

Nice fish Kalvin. Did hear of some good reports to compliment what you did. Talked with two guides who limited the past two days. One was fishing right around Mobridge and the other was south, so they're going all over. Both reported nice fish and both were live baiting with crawlers and plastics. Fall is here, get out there, these fish are really healthy.
