If anyone is familiar with fall fishing for walleye in the Western Basin',could you let me know when is the best time? I've been going out with a charter every year for five years in June;but I've got it bad and I'm out of walleye and would like to try in my 18ft. deep v.I'll be coming from Chicago and would like to know if the Huron or Vermilion area would be better than the Western Basin. And when might be the best time to catch walleye without having to go 15miles out.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Huron/Vermilion is your best bet. now till ice up. fish should be moving in closer as water temps drop. I fish it in my 18 footer. just be careful.

COME HERE NOW - Here is Huron / Vermilion Ohio...Walleye fishing is execellent - water temps have come down and the fish are here. Come on over this coming weekend for the 9th Annual Walleye Central Get Together. I pulled some real nice fish only 4 to 5 miles out from Huron today.

Reels,
I caught fish on both Reef Runners and spoons on Sunday and have been doing so for the last few weeks. Water temp is down to 55 so cranks will get even better. Sunday my dipseys and spoons were slow but caught fish on 40 jets and spoons. Spoons were better from 10AM to 2PM then the cranks were better from 2-4 PM. I've been running the Silver Streak spoons this year. Both the Junior and Mini streak sizes. The Juniors are the size of the Scorpions and the Minis about the size of the regular size Stinger spoons which are also still catching lots of fish. Lately having some chartruse has been good. Lots of colors working but the Blueberry Muffin, Salamander/Poison Frog, and Lady Bug patterns have been consistent along with Eriedescent and Pink Panties on copper for the Silver Streak spoon colors. Reef Runners yesterday were Blueberry Muffin, Salamander, and a white based one similar to the Pink Panties pattern that I had custom painted. 150 back on the Reef Runners off Big Boards. 40 jets 120 to 140 back for us but most of the charters were fishing 90 and 110 foot leads on 40 jets so just watch your sonar and adjust accordingly. 2.2 to 2.5 MPH GPS SOG.
BRING BIG COOLERS - Sunday we had a 30 1/4" and 28" fish with several in the 26 to 27 inch range. Father and sons trip - the boys had never caught one bigger than 18 inches so every fish was a "personal best" and both boys caught a "Fish Ohio" walleye.
If the weather / wind cooperates at all this should be the best fishing we've had during a Get Together in a while.

Steve did you check the 27/27, or where you in a little closer or further out than that, this weekend is going to be really good, can't wait to see some of the fish for the braggin rights tourney.
Perchers have been picking up some real nice bonus Walleye jigging spoons both before and after the last blow in 22 foot of water so they're in real close off the Condo's East of Vermilion. A friend who fished yesterday evening said the drifters were taking some nice one's as well from about the same area. They picked up four Eye's trolling in an hour, but stopped to Perch and took some nice one's, including three fish ohio's to 14 inches. Said it is hard to pick right now, big perch or big eyes. Don't ya hate when that happens!

Freebyrd is right on the money. My buds and I did our annual charter with Ron Levitan of Passin Time Charters yesterday (Sunday) and as usual Ron did an outstanding job. IMHO he's one of the best in the business.
We fished between Huron and Cedar Point in 39-42 ft of water. Dipsies and jet 40s with spoons back 125 off big boards. Not hot and heavy but we mamaged a limit of 36 fish in about 6 hours. We didn't get any hogs but all of our fish were in the 21-23 inch range, and very well fed. Great day, and I'm sure it's only going to get better off Huron.

Sun started at 25.5 / 28 and headed to 27 27 where the south edge of the pack was. Pulled a few but headed west / northwest as I don't like to fish in a pack and picked all day to the 30 33. Worked the 30-31N to 31-33W on Monday and got nice fish again same basic program.
Fish also caught inside (25-27N 26 to 28W) Monday and on the 24 to 26 line W out further 32-24 on Monday
