Wow, sounds like a hog party !! Way to go man and thanks for the report .
I love Michigan and being close to Saginaw Bay is awesome for numbers of fish, but with the fall bullet fishing down there and the incredible walleye piggies late fall I may have to move :P .

Something Fishy, the fall walleye fishing has been good this year, but not the steelie bite at the Vermillion River mouth. I don't know about the river itself, but there have been very few steelies caught outside the Vermillion river, which is usually good this time of year. Don't know why.
On the other hand, the summer steelie bite was awesome.

Hawkeye, the reason for the poor steelhead bite outside the river has been due to the poor clarity. Inside the river, the action has been slow with all the rain but it was incredible yesterday morning. There are fish all the way from the mouth of the river to the #### at Wakeman. We had 3 guys catch 14 in a little over 2 hours Sunday morning. 6 keepers all over 7 lbs. The other 8 ranged from 16-22 inches. All fish were caught on orange or silver inline spinners.

Osulou, are you wading for these fish, or from a boat? Thanks

I heard a couple guys got into them in the morning at the mouth. I only walleye fished but heard from word of mouth.

We fish by boat between the public ramp and first shale bank south. I know 3 waders that had their limit of 6 in less than 2 hours yesterday as well. We fish farther south until the river clears than start working our way north with the clarity. The east side of the public boat ramp from the tressel to the southern tressel at Valley Harbor is a great easy first spot to fish. I heard the fish are stacked up from the mouth and Lagoons south.

Hey Hawk Eye,
Yeah, the late summer/early fall fishery was what I was referring to . I would come home and go right to the board and see who did what with the bullets when they were really going .
My wife and I attended the WCGT which was the first time I'd ever fished the area . We had our boat in a well close to Sterling State park in the western basin, but never had a chance to get over that far east . We ended up moving north, so fishing Erie stopped as we're just south of Saginaw Bay now and spent our time there . But with low water, tons of small fish and the crash of Lake Hurons salmon fishing, I wish I was down that way . I have to say we both fell in love with the area (Huron to Vermilion) . Even though our boat failed us, we had an awesome time there .
I may try to find a late summer/fall well down there or a secure yard to put the boat in and commute down there on weekends . It's like a 4 hour drive, so trailering back and forth with with a heavy boat is just too much every weekend . If any of you guys in that area have any suggestions regarding reasonable wells for a small boat (24') or a good secure yard where I could leave the boat on the trailer and pop it in and out close to a launch please let me know :) .

We took 10 walleyes-3-6lbs and 2-steelhead 18"-20". We fished from about 9:30 to 2pm. Found our fish to be in pockets. 6 of the 10 fish were doubles. Everytime we turned to go back thru our spot it seemed like someone was already there with more lined up to go thru. Deep Reefrunners anywhere from 35'-150' back took the eyes. I switched to chrome backed lures as the sun went higher and that seemed to help. No real pattern other than change in speed. We stayed on gps 1.8-2.1 and made a lot of turns, they hit both sides of the boat. It was as busy as I can remember for a nov. day.

Is it legal to limit out in the morning on one boat and then take another limit in the afternoon on a different boat?
Not in the state of Ohio.

If your reffering to our two trips on the same boat on Sunday, my partner and his father went out in the morning and took 11 then went home. I went out with different people that were not on the morning trip, totally different crew the only thing that was the same was the boat. Nothing wrong with doing that at all, Mr Law.

K Gonefishin, it's always funny to see the responses of the internet fishing police...particularly from someone who types in DNR as his name. Some people must have a lot of free time on their hands. Good report on your trip. It was a great weekend of fishing.

Yeah I know it's comical at times, ohh well, I know I follow the law and if I do get checked I will always be in compliance with the law so no big deal too me. It's the internet what do you want, Yes this weekend was awesome fishing best quality of fish I have seen this year, it was easy limits all year but tons of 2003 fish, heck those fish are getting decent already, next year will be awesome, although I think those fish are starting to wise up a bit, they where suicidal in the spring and summer.
Kevin
DNR that's a good one.

Gonefishin and others. My fishin buddy and I usually cast/drift. Seems this time of year everone is trolling. We're newbies to trolling and are wondering: When you say "125 ft back" are you folks running boards? dipsys? flat lining? any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, willis

Thanks for any info.

It really depends on who's giving the report and how deep they needed to fish . Normally that would be off of a board, either inline or big . Usually if it's behind a dipsy, jet or disc they would mention it . Also, if it was a flatline most will tell you that as well . They may also refer to reefrunner lures which at times can get confusing . Normally a reefrunner reference means the deep diver . Ripsticks are a similar lure without the big bill, so it runs shallower .
That's the way I understand it anyways, your mileage may vary :P .

I know K Gone and Fishon are big fans of the inline boards. When they say '125 back', they mean they let the lure out 125', then clip on the inline board, and let the desired amount of line out (depending on how far out you want the presentation to the side of the boat).
I did well on cranks Sunday flatlined behind the boat, and also ran Dipsy/spoon setups on a 3 setting. Both programs pulled six fish each.

Seems like we'll be having alot of OJT Friday. I know we have boards but this clears up how we should use them. Thanks for the help.

Yeah the other guys pretty much summed it up, the bite is still super hot out there by day and night, get out while you can, I am fishing tonight, thursday, friday and Saturday if the weather holds till then.
Run inline planer boards, both 800 series deep diving Reef Runners are taking alot of fish and so are the shallower Rip Sticks. Things are good right now to be pulling small boards with the calm water they are alot easier to read when it's calm for the guys who don't run them that often, alot of short strikers out there too, replace the last hook toward the back with a wide gap or bend it out a little bit with needlenose pliers, it will make a world of difference believe me.

I am new to trolling myself and am having trouble getting the boards to head away from the boat. How should they look? As in what angle to the boat? I let out about 85 ft of 20# planer board line but didn't really seam to get too far out from the boat, they just made a big V. I did manage to stumble on some fish, but I think they may need to be adjusted. Thanks for any help.

I can't wait.Leaving at 2am,plan on being on the water by 8am Thurs-Sat. Steve
A v sounds reasonable. Deep divers/heavy weight/little dipsies/lots of drag causes in-line boards to run further in back of the boat than if you are pulling a stick bait.
What direction your running if there are winds & waves can affect how they run as will turns. One side of the boat may go way out to the side and the other may be way in back if your going cross wind. Easy to end up dragging a fish for awhile on an outside line if the boat is crabbing and your not watching for the initial strike.

Thanks, I never really thought the cause would have ben the deep cranks, but it makes sense. Do the fish hang out here in Huron for very long, or are they just heading back west?
