I don't know about May, however I have been to Lac Seul in the fall and the walleye and northern fishning was fantastic. I assume the spring would be no different. I is a very large lake, I would suggest you hire a guide at least for a day to show you aroung.

Before you go, verify that the walleye season is open. THere are parts of the lake that the season is closed until about June 1. I got burned on that once, since the lodge owner did not tell us until we got there.

Definitly worth the trip. If you dont hire a guide, at least follow someone out if your going up or downlake very far. Lots of channels and island to confuse you on the way back. Also, there are lots of obstructions and rocks out in the middle of nowhere. You wont need to go very far to find walleyes on Lac Seul. If your up on the upper part of the lake near Ear Falls, for starters, go to the mouth of the Wenasaga river. Or Sawmill bay. Farther out will be McKenzie, and if youre feeling really adventurous, head on down to Vaughn(. Vaughn may be still closed at that time tho, as it is a major spawning area for Lac Seul. You wont need to go far, unless you're one of those: Im tired of catching Walleyes here, lets go catch some somewhere else type of guys! Happy fishing!!!

Fishing Hot Spots Adventures offers a reasonable priced trip to the Chamberlain Narrows on Lac Suel on two different dates. The times are late summer - these may be better times than the spring trip, with the type of conditions we have been having this year. Fishing Hot Spots Adventures can be contacted by phone at 1 800 990 0123 / e-mail at info@fishinadventures.com
The Web Site is : www.fishinadventures.com
Good Fishin
Opposed to some of the other posts, I think early is great. We have had great success at Scalar lake , Bear Narrows, and the entire eastern end of the lake, as opposed to the Ear Falls.
Late May this year may be the hot time. We have in the past always gone without a guide. We used to camp, when it was OK, now we have flown in from Andersons resort @ Sioux Lookout. A first class operation. Mr Robbins @ Chamberlain Narrows also has a good facilty. They previously were Lac Seul Outfiters, I am not sure what they are now but we went with them for many years and enjoyed it. They are generally at the Minesota shows. (Both Anderson & Robbins)
Good Luck, if you want more info email me, have maps, other data

glen,
hope this is you, anyway i was up there the 2nd week in june last year out fo hudson on a houseboat trip with 8 other guys. 100 fish per boat per day was not uncommon. fish on sunken islands and mid depth flats 12-24 ft deep. caught them on just about everything, jigs, rigs, bottombouncing. the only live bait we used were crawlers. much easier and cheaper. just be sure you pack them in paper and not dirt canada is kinda funny about things like that. anyway e-mail me back for specifics or i'll see you at the shop

Could you identify the houseboat vendor you used on Lac Suel. My friends and I have houseboated on LOTW and Rainy Lake the past eight years and would like a new adventure for 2002. We already have a trip scheduled this year for LOTW. Did your group find the boat comfortable for eight or nine men? Did your group pilot the boat or did you need a guide to take the houseboat out to different spots? There are excellent navigation maps for LOTW and Rainy and have been informed that no such maps exist for Lac Suel, how do you get around without good maps? How was the northern and smallmouth fishing at that time of the year?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
Lac Suel Floating Lodges is where my buddies and I went out of in Hudson. We did a 75'er for 9 guys and it was great. The folks who run the business are super and we hired a pilot to drive us 55 miles up to the northern reaches away from the crowds. We followed in our boats and fished all the way up and caught fish just about anywhere we tried. Total cost for 9 guys for one week was about $450 each. This included all the gas for the houseboat, the $200 for the pilot (we tipped her), and all associated taxes. The houseboats are only a couple years old and the one we had was like a condo on floats. TV, VCR, (2) kitchen areas with (2) fridges, on board generator, (5) bedrooms with (2) beds each, (2) bathrooms, (2) new sofas (one was a sleeper which we could of used if more guys had come with), 14'X 12' screened in porch with gas grill, and a table big enough to sit 10-12 guys playing poker. We were in hog heaven! Can't wait to do it again. Their # is (807)582-3284. PS: Definately hire a pilot. The lake is not marked and even the folks who live there are cautious. if you think Rainy or LOW has structure you should see this lake. Just my boggling!

Thanks for the reply on Lac Seul. What time of the year did you go? Did you try fishing for smallmouth and northern?

we went through the same people that was previosly mentioned. acouple of the guys i went with had done this before and know the people so they let us take the big boat alone with 4 boats in tow. i will try to dig up a map that i think one of the guys had, if i find one in the next couple of weeks i'll let you know. i had to leave halfway through the week before i got to the smallie and gator water, but those guys did manage to pick up both species and also boated two muskies. we were south of chamberlain narrows around an island called banana. much structure to fish. this year i will be on a quest to find some killer smallie water. one other question i have for you is, what am i to expect at this year's gov's opener? will it be fun or don't any of you guys get involved? talk to you soon craig

Thanks for the info on your houseboat trip to Lac Seul. I don't know anything about a Gov. Cup., is that the Minn opener? In regards to smallmouth bass fishing check out the following Rainy Lake, LOTW, and Sturgeon Bay. My friends and I have fished all three bodies of water with satifying results.
