View Full Version : Garmin GPS, internal or external antenna?
I looking at purchasing Garmin 160 or 180 GPS. I see they come with either a internal or external antenna. Was wondering if there is any advantage over one or the other. Will the internal one work just as good?
Thanks in advance.

I've ordered the Garmin with the external antenae. I found that when I tried to use my handheld GPS and had it mounted in the electronics compartment of my Pro V it could not pick up signals through the aluminum over top of the unit. I had to move the antenae to an exposed location. I think you will find the external antenae more versatile.
there is no differnce in performance between antenna's. depends on where you are going to mount it. if it is out in the open or under a windshield without a cover an internal antenna is the only way to go. if it is in a electronics compartment even if it is fairly open you will have to go external antenna.
i am waiting for 162 it is supposed finally be available the first week in may.
good luck

Bear,
I've got a Garmin GPS II with a small swivel antenna as well as a "remote" antenna that plugs into the jack on the back side. This works well both in the boat and truck. The small swivel antenna is fine for the boat when it's on the dash, under the wind scree but in the truck, where there is a fair amount of metal over the unit I need the "remote" antenna to get a clear "view" of the sky.
I've had the strictly internal antenna unit as well and it worked quite well on the boat, though it limited me as to where I mounted it.

Bear,
I have both types of units. One for each of my charter boats. The internal antenna works great on any boat that has a canvas top or is open. However, if you have a hard top then you MUST have the external antenna. Good Fishing.

I got a Gatmin 75 and it shoots just fine through my fiberglass flying bridge (hardtop).
