OK, forgive the repeat of another non-fishing related topic, but I have been doing some serious digging as a result of the Canadian firearm registration post. Specifically, this is what I have found about the Australian firearm issues that do not seem to get circulated. (Surprise, surprise) Australia's new firearm laws are the similar to Germany's and they have had those laws in place for 100's of years.
First, Australia did NOT ban ALL firearms.
Second, They did not RAID homes and seize firearms.
Third, It is not illegal to own a firearm in Australia.
Visit the following site and get some real facts about what really happened and more importantly, WHY! It is one-sided thinking and information that make this topic so dangerous. Before you make up your mind either way, check this site out and tell me what you think.

Go to "A Beginners Guide to Australian Firearm Laws" toward the bottom of the site.
Though, I am not totally in agreement with all government methods but neither do I believe all the information I get from the NRA is accurate, I think due diligence and responsible viewpoints/information distribution is needed. Everyone gets mixed info on this issue and what happens is a mass panic when the government is attempting to appeal, what seams like one side of the firearm ownership issue. Realize that attacking the firearm itself appeals to the MAJORITY of public sentiment when a shooting occurs. It is the easiest tangible item. Blame the firearm, not the shooter. Its not right, but what CAN be done to curb the irresponsible distribution and use of firearms? This is not a rhetorical question, but a real desire to get your insight. Is it education, special licenses..what? Without proper controls, we will loose our right to own a firearm. The majority say so. SO...what is the answer? Where is the middle of the road?
Thanks for the latitude.
