OK, forgive the repeat of another non-fishing related topic, but I have been doing some serious digging as a result of the Canadian firearm registration post. Specifically, this is what I have found about the Australian firearm issues that do not seem to get circulated. (Surprise, surprise) Australia's new firearm laws are the similar to Germany's and they have had those laws in place for 100's of years.

First, Australia did NOT ban ALL firearms.
Second, They did not RAID homes and seize firearms.
Third, It is not illegal to own a firearm in Australia.

Visit the following site and get some real facts about what really happened and more importantly, WHY! It is one-sided thinking and information that make this topic so dangerous. Before you make up your mind either way, check this site out and tell me what you think.

http://www.firearmcontrol.org.au
Go to "A Beginners Guide to Australian Firearm Laws" toward the bottom of the site.

Though, I am not totally in agreement with all government methods but neither do I believe all the information I get from the NRA is accurate, I think due diligence and responsible viewpoints/information distribution is needed. Everyone gets mixed info on this issue and what happens is a mass panic when the government is attempting to appeal, what seams like one side of the firearm ownership issue. Realize that attacking the firearm itself appeals to the MAJORITY of public sentiment when a shooting occurs. It is the easiest tangible item. Blame the firearm, not the shooter. Its not right, but what CAN be done to curb the irresponsible distribution and use of firearms? This is not a rhetorical question, but a real desire to get your insight. Is it education, special licenses..what? Without proper controls, we will loose our right to own a firearm. The majority say so. SO...what is the answer? Where is the middle of the road?

Thanks for the latitude.

I think before you believe either one you should look up a sight that is in australia and ask someone who lives there right now. This one sounds like and reads like a sight after guns to me maybe not. But I'd send a e-mail to someone that lives there before I'd believe anything in news stories or on the web. Better to get from the horses mouth ya know! Try JJ Stump Jumper lures they are in Aussie. Just my opinion! Craig

Aquaman,

Over the past couple of years, I've enjoyed reading your posts. I know what I have to say will sound like a personal attack, but it isn't meant to be.

In my opinion, anyone who believes that a restriction of guns is different than a ban of guns is not thinking rationally. What is the reasoning behind a restriction? With the eventual banning of whatever is being restricted.

I'm not saying that everyone should support the cause of the NRA. I can see where some people are taken aback by their rhetoric. But, what I don't understand is how someone who enjoys sports such as hunting and fishing doesn't see the threats of anti-gun associations or animal rights associations. Their agenda is all the same: take away your right to hunt and/or fish.

GCA = Gun Control Australia. They ARE the horses mouth.

I also do business with 12 companies in Australia. 3 of my contacts are avid hunter/fishermen and I was directed to this site by one of them. Furthermore, several have commented to me that they get questions all the time regarding the "real" scoop. The hunters that have taken the test and received the license have guns and use them for hunting. Thos e that do not have a license or have an illegal gun, exchanged them for $500/gun.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-07-01 AT 04:04PM (CST)[p]No offense taken. However, I have to ask you where in my post I sided with either group more over, when did I support the Anti hunting groups? But I respect your opinion and I did open this to feedback based on the information provided.

Let me first say that I neither support or object to what was on the web site, I just offered it as an insight to the real actions in Australia vs what the NRA would have you believe.

Some will say, that you cannot give an inch, I say that won battle will cost the war.
