LAST EDITED ON Mar-07-01 AT 10:30PM (CST)[p]Given your handle of Michigander, and that you have a big boat, I'm going to assume that your in Michigan and using the boat on one or more of the Great Lakes.
Based on my experience with the C-Map NT cartrides for Lk Michigan and Lk Erie, I would highly recommend a fixed mount, mapping GPS using this cartridge technology. Further, with what I have heard about the new WASS technology (and that you want "best"), a new unit for me would include it as a feature.
First on my list would be the Raytheon Raychart 320. It has dual CMap-NT cartridge capabilities, WAAS, 12 channel GPS. Have seen it for less than $800.
Standard Horizon has just introduced their CP series of WAAS GPS units. The company has produced good VHF Marine Radios for a lot of years -- first nav units I have seen from them. Price is right though with the CP150 (5" diag mono lcd display, 1 NT cart) at about $400 and the CP160 (6" diag mono lcd display, 2 NT cart) at about $600. The CP170 has the same features as the 160 but adds color lcd for $1500. The 150 really sounds interesting to me!
If you really want the "best", Raytheon's Raychart 530 with WAAS antenna is about $2,700. Color, 1000 waypoints, fancy interface to other Raytheon equipment like sounders and radar. Furuno's GP1650D is nice too at $1,800 or so.

Another vote for the Raymarine WAAS GPS. It is by far the best I have ever used. I can't wait to use the chartplotter up in Lake Ontario in a month.
