I try to question every thing in my life from time to time. just to let my self know if its something I still want to be doing.

Fishing comes to mind today.

my answer?

Challange, thats a good part

Spirituality, a personal part of the sport

The lightning that travels throught the line & rod into my hand when a fish hits, I love that part (first contact)

a million more reasons too, but the number one reason that I keep fishing.

The people.......

No matter what you do every day in Real life, if you a homless person living under a bridge, a drug dealer on the street coner, a lawer or Doctor. when we hit the water we are all fishermen. there only competition is for the better fishing hole. at the end of the day, when we dit down to supper we are all friends again, and can share storys of the day just like we were life long friends.

Thank you, to each and everyone of you for being what you are.

Rough Guy say, fishing is not a matter of life and death, it is much more important than that.

The greatest sunrises and sunsets I have ever seen -have been from a fishing boat. The thrill of releasing my first 7lb walleye and releasing the first 21 inch smallie have come from a fishing boat.
My best memories have taken place when I have been on the water and fishing!

My Dad always says you don't run into many people who fish who need a shrink... but there are many people who could be helped if they just went fishing. :)

The smell of 2-cycle smoke in the spring is right up there with the smell of shotgun powder overlooking fog lifting off a lake in the fall.

There is so much more, but my most vivid and favorite memories are from a boat.

Can't wait for 3 more weeks... Ice is usually off here about April 1-7.

Why do I fish?

Thats a good question, what I want to know is why do i fish for walleyes??

Trout are easier to catch....
Bass fight harder....
Salmon get lots bigger...so do Sturgeon
Steelhead jump....

I guess when it comes down to it, Walleyes seem to be the most intresting fish to fish for. They can be so ##### fickle, most fish wont pack up and move 10 miles on you overnight. I also like the idea of all the various presentations, one minute you can be vertical jigging, and an hour later be pulling cranks at 3 mph.

Besides that walleye guys are a lot more fun to hang out with, wether your talking to a old timer in 14 footer, or some dude with a flashy new LUND. For the most part walleye guys are some of the greatest folks to be around, I can sit and talk walleyes forever, or atleast till the beer is gone.

Have I ever questioned why I fish? No, I don't think I have. It's just something I know I have to do to stay sane. I know my blood pressure goes down as soon as I hit the road. My adreneline rushes as soon as I get the first bite. My senses fill up with the sights, sounds, and smells of nature all around me. My blood Boils when I miss that big one. The feeling of commeraderie overwhelms me when I'm sitting in a pack of boats waiting for "blast off". And, the sense of accomplishment arises at the end of the day when I have given those walleye my best shot. Sometimes I'm successful and sometimes I'm not so successful, but either way I know that whenever I fish, it's going to be a good day..;-)

Oh, and whoever said it before...I have also seen some of my best sunrises and sunsets while sitting in a boat. That's so cool.

3 more weeks? I didn't know Minnesota went south of the Mason Dixon line.

There are 24 inches of ice and another 20-30 inches of snow in Hayward area. The weather reports do not get us out of the 30's any time soon.

You have the why we fish right, another addition is it is a great bonding time for children and grandchildren.

Take em along.

Historical dates :)

Big Lakes around the Twin Cities average April 7-15, and the smaller darker lakes sometime between March 25- April 7.

...I do remember a blizzard coming through an May 15th once, but that was northern MN. That was wild!

And you're right - it's even more fun watching a kid catch crappies than anything else in the world!

I think most of us work much harder when we go fishing than we do in our work but for some unknown reason it's not the same thing. There is something about the sport that I don't believe any one of us can explain and hopefully no one ever will, something that seems to lift the weight of the world's troubles from our shoulders. Is it the subtle tap of a walleye, the aggressive strike of a northern, the aerial show of a bass or trout, the beauty of the fish themselves and the appreciation of nature as we know it? Or is it the camaraderie of being able to talk to people we don't really know who share the same interest and passion as we do? I think it is all these things and much more and that is why I believe it is to special for even any words to explain. Now where was I?

I think Robert Traver's sentiments from his book "Anatomy of a Fisherman" sums it up. He said, "I fish not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearlyh as much fun.

For most of us,if not all of us, fishing is a very mental sport. We are always thinking. Maybe of our presentation, or maybe about our location. When our mind is actively engaged in our sport of choice it can not be burdened by the negative emotions brought on by worry . I don't know about you but I can't think about two different things at the same time. The other thing is that I have a dfficult time doing "nothing". I remember just trying to lay in the sun as if to stalk the perfect tan but lasted no more than five minutes because I had to be doing "something". What I have found is that for myself that perfect "something" is fishing. Why I can even stalk that perfect tan if I do so while I am fishing. Just my thoughts. COACH

Because I love to compete...with the fish that is. In all honesty, unless I am having some form of success, or unless I am learning something new, I don't enjoy it that much. I live to outsmart a fish, so if the fish is outsmarting me, then hopefully I have learned something.

As an old fiend once told me "You can't fish and worry at the same time" (That was three boats ago)
