View Full Version : Hi-Vis Yellow Line for Jig
Am thinking of using a hi-visibility yellow line, 10# test for jigging so I can see any line movement. Any of you have experience with this. I have concerns about its visibility to the fish. If you have used it on jigs, did you use it for casting or vertical jigging?
I appreciate the responses in advance.

I've been using high vis Stren for years without any problem, in fact I also use Easy Cast Coffee on Lake Erie for smallmouth in ultra clear water with no ill effects. Sometimes we read too much into the thought processes of animals with brains that weigh less than an oz.
High vis lines make a huge amount of sense.
Most folk find that there is no difference in the number of bites with ultra clear line or high vis lines for jigging line. It might be a different story for a rigging line - where a fish can stop and look over a presentation - but a jigged bait is pretty much a reaction strike.
If you have any hesitation at all - simply tie is a tiny swivel - and add on a 5 foot leader of clear mono or florocarbon.
That way - you will be able to see the line - but the fish will have no connection of the clear line to the jig.
Good idea for jigging.
Take care

uffda.
i have used hi vis line for awhile now for everything....
especially jigging when its important to be able to see
a twitch in the line.....
i just cant pick up that clear stuff jigging, rigging or
trolling....i havent noticed a huge drop off in bites either.
clearly, its the hi vis gold stren and the solar trilene for
me

I use gold stren for casting and verticle jigging.I have not seen any loss of strikes doing either. By the way i use green fireline when trolling cranks, no leader thank-you.

We use Hi-Vis line for trolling for years. Love it. We use both green & yellow. Have tied on leader but can't say we have seen any difference.

My wife has used hi-vis for years now. I have gone with clear mono. We have boated an equal number of walleye vertical jigging. The main reason she is using hi-vis (stren or fireline) is her poor eyesight. She just can't see the clear stuff. AND the majority of our jigging is on the "big muddy" Missouri River in ND. With the stained water I really don't think that there is any difference.
During one of the sport shows this winter I was convinced to make the switch for myself also. We will start this spring with her using fireline hi-vis and me with stren hi-vis. She will be using fireline so that I can have her using the same weight jig as I do. If we are using the same size mono I always have to put a heavier jig on her rod so that she can stay in contact with the bottom. By her using 2/6 fireline hi-vis she should be able to use the same 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jig that I am using.
By the way we vertical jig nearly 99% of the time.

i have used it and have had pretty good luck with it, now for this year Power-Pro has it in their super braid, the 10 lb line is 2 pound diameter, cant wait to try it . good luck and good fishin.

I have used it and it works fine. I've also used the Trilene solar (bright green) with similar results. I was at a seminar w/ Tackle Terry Tuma yesterday and he said that you increase your bites and success 100% for every level you drop down in line. Thus you would do 100% better dropping from 8# to 6# test line. He said the reason is not so much the visibility of the line, but that the lighter line lets the jig/bait fall and act more naturally. Also, the smaller diameter lines create less resistance in the water when the fish takes the bait, thus they are less likely to feel you.
It's definately something to think about. I'm going to switch to 6# test for most of my walleye fishing (especially jigging) and just deal witht the fact that I may have to respool more often because it doesn't hold up as well as 8 or 10# test. Good luck. Bret
Thanks guys for the responses. I am definitely going to go to a hi-vis line for jigging. And Bret, you make a great point. Think I'll go down to 6# and simply remove the end # of yards every so often (we got lots of rocks that are hard and abrasive).
Thanks again,

Power Pro makes a high vis yellow superline now. I've had a lot of trouble with Fireline fraying. UFDA, power pro is made in Grand Junction Colorado. As I try to do ABC (Always Buy Colorado)!

I've used Hi-vis the last couple years jigging on Big Stone with good results. The only time I've noticed fish sensitivity to the hi-vis was ice fishing for panfish this winter. Most of the time it hasn't been a problem, but on several occasions I needed to attach a mono leader before the panfish would bite...

We (my son and I) have used gold stren for years with good results. We've waded beside others using clear lines and have done as well. Also used XT solar and it may be just a personal preference, but I like the gold stren a little better. It seemed the XT was a little stiffer and harder for me to see. The only time I have seen fish totally turned off the hi-vis was in a clear lake with stocker trout. We fished side by side using gold and clear 4# stren and identical spinners. Even traded rods, and the trout would't touch the hi-vis stuff. Give it a try. Heye5
See now, that's what I was concerned about. Not ice fishing...I live in AZ... but about this line in clear water (and I assume your ice fishing water is clearer than the muddy Missouri as mentioned above. Anyway, I'm going to try it here, but will take Bret's advice and downsize.

I,ve used trilene XT ,since it's come on the market in my area 8-10 yrs. ago, even in clear water,no problems. This line is durable, resist's twisting, and is easy to work with. It's also great line for nite fishing.I tie my line right too the jig or lure.I have used leaders, usually 2' of 6# florocarbon line to 8# XT solar but, did not notice my catch rate improve at all, so now I spool with 1/2 spool of cheap mono, then fill the top 1/2 with 8# XT solar. good fishin
We spend big bucks on expensive rods with increased sensativity yet we use line we can't see. This doesn't make sense. Are we all victims of advertising? A line will twitch long before your expensive rod will telegraph the info. to your hand. We have all heard the saying..."be a line watcher". Colored line makes this a lot easier. We have also all heard that "colored line spooks fish". I'm not sure I believe that colored line spooks fish but i often put a 3 ft. clear snell on the end anyway just in case. Colored line lessens eye strain and it also helps you keep track of the differant lines when trolling. At this point in time Hi/Vis line is not very popular but that will change when using common sense becomes popular again.
