Could you guys give me some good information on Anchors?
I've bought a new boat and motor and I want to buy a really good Anchor. The boat is 17'long, total weight of the boat & motor is:1600lbs. What type and name brand of Anchor would you recommend for The Great Lakes and Southern and Central Ontario Lakes?
I appreciate any comments, advice.
Thank you .
Peter

I've carried a "Richter" anchor for 3 or 4 years now, and am very pleased with it.

First, it holds well in a broad variety of bottom compositions.

Second, by design it is easy to extract from "problem" bottoms, like rocky reefs (where a lot of my old anchors of other styles now rest!)

WATER SPIKE ITS THAT SIMPLE. NOT VERY HEAVY

The waterspike is a good choice for holding in bigger rock, but is almost worthless in gravel and sand, especially when dealing with heavy waves. I've got a waterspike on one end of a 150' rope, and a 28 pound navy style anchor on the other. The navy will stay put, but you run the risk of losing it in the bigger rocks.

Try the new Pro Anchor from Guidemasters. It will be displayed at the Mpls SportShow next week for the first time. I tested one last year and found it to hold better than Richter. The website is www.guidemaster.net

BigDave2,

The website is either not working or you gave the incorrect address. Can you please re-check and let me know. Thanks.

The website will be up this weekend. I saw the test version of it last night and it is an excellent looking site. I will post again once it is up for sure.

I would recommend at least 150ft. of rope with an anchor that has some type of catching teeth on it . Not a round or plastic coated steel one you want a galvinized one , but the main part that everyone has left off is the CHAIN at least 2 to 3 ft of heavy chain, this is what will make it catch.

The Pro Anchor by Guidemaster website is up. The address is
www.guidemasters.net. They will also be at the Mpls. Sport show March 16-25, 2001 in booth # 64. Take a look at and i think you will agree this is a great anchor.

Looks like a Richter copycat, minus the chain.

The Pro Anchor from Guidemasters has been around for about 15 years. It was developed by some guys in a machine shop who wanted a better holding anchor. They deceided last year that there might be a market for a better anchor and refined the appearance.
