Who do you think is a better outdoors company? If I had to vote I would say Cabela's.

Down fall -Cabela's brand name gear, reels, scopes, ect... are not very good.

I think Bass pro for fishing and Cabelas for camping and hunting. Was at a Cabelas for the first time this past Monday(70 miles away, Bass pro is only 25 min away)

For fishing, Bass Pro without question. I just visited the Cabela's Owwatonna store and their fishing department was an embarassment to the company. I've seen gas stations with more lures. Conversely anytime I visit a Bass Pro I come away impressed and much poorer. I do like Cabela's Elk Sandwiches though!

For fishing I would go w/ Bass Pro. First time I went to the Springfield, MO store I spent a half a day ogling all the stuff. At Cabelas's in Owatonna I really don't see anything I can't get here in town. Nice but not the awe I felt at Bass Pro. Also they had a whole warehouse of bargain stuff compared to the bargain cove at Cabelas.
my 2 cents......

I'm a regular here in W>C> and will make this an anonymous post. Both have their qualities, however, my vote is for cabela's.
Let me explain. I do a lot of volunteer work for a non-profit organization. Cabela's has taken the position that their business is for profit, and for the enhancement of our resources. They get involved civically. Without getting into great detail, Cabelas stands head and shoulders above Bass Pro/Red head, etc. I'll spend my dollars at Cabela's. Every time.

I'm with you. Cabela's seems more geared toward the Northern outdoorsmen, and subsequently carry gear better suited to the "drastic" climatic changes (like this year) than does BP. I get the feeling from Bass Pros that walleye fishermen are second rate and do not cater to the more "finesse" approach to cathing 'ole marble eyes.JMO

My vote is for Cabala's! I charge up to $30K a month on my Cabela's card and so I get 95% of my gear for free!! Their return policy is super. They once sent me a box to return my aqua-view in! When I got it back I got additional 50' cable and infared light- free!! Only downfall I have found is lots and I mean lots of items are out of stock which leads me to believe they don't stock as much merchandise as you would think.
Anybody jealous??????????????????????????????????????????? ??????

I would have to say I am a dedicated Cabela's shopper. BP lost my business when they kept sending me the wrong merchandise, numerous times. The only problem I have with Cabela's is the quantity of stock. They need to stock a little more and special orders would be nice without having to buy a minimum just to place the order.
Cabela's without a doubt!

Bass Pro has better brats (the Gurnee store), Cabela's has better bison-burgers.
I've had several good visits to the main Bass Pro store in Springfield, but have visited only the Owatanna Cabela's store. Someday I'll visit the Nebraska homestead.
I'd like to know where to find gas stations with better lure selections than Cabela's -- it would be a regular stop.
I WOULDNT GO TO EITHER ONE BECAUSE IF YOU ASK THEM WHERE THE FISH ARE BITTING THEY DONT KNOW. AND THEY USALLY DONT KNOW WHAT THE HOT BAIT IS . AND YOUR FISHING AND HUNTTING STORES THAT ARE IN YOUR ARE COULD TELL YOU TWICE AS MUCH. WHAT TO USE WHERE TO GO ON THE LAKE WHICH LAKE. THEY MIGHT BE BIGGER BUT NOT BETTER THAN KNOWING THE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE.

I live 7 miles from Bass Pro and work 17 miles from Cabela's here in Michigan. Visit both places on a bi-weekly basis just to check out new things, getting ideas for the season, etc.
For Fishing, I would have to rate Bass Pro over Cabela's, especially for bass fishing. As far as boating accessories, both are about equal but Cabela's has a better selection of electronics. Bass Pro seems to have more deals on their fishing stuff (one reason I visit often) versus Cabela's. The fly fishing section is nicer at Bass Pro, has a very expereinced fly fishermen, dedicated fly tyer, and guides when not working.
But when hunting season rolls around, Bass Pro is a joke at the store. Their golf area is twice as big as archery, do not carry near the merchandise as Cabela's, nor have the amount of experienced salespersons.
For overall clothing, again - Cabela's, especially in hunting and fishing. For casual wear, Sears works for me.
Overall customer service rating, I would again lean towards Cabela's. Cabela's seem to go out of the way to make me happy where I need to sometimes fight for complete satisfaction with Bass Pro. I never had a mis-shipment from either company and never will with both of them being so close.
I was disappointed in both stores for the overall lack of ice fishing lures and general selection. Gander Mountain did a better job than they did (only 15 miles away).
If I am buying one or two baits, live bait or just a spool of thread, will shop at the local store. When the quantity goes up, I head for the big stores.

I shop at both. Bass Pro can sometimes have a slightly lower price on tackle and usually has it in stock. Cabelas has more outdoor accessories by far. I have recently had problems with Cabelas being out of stock on items I need. Bass Pro does cater to the bass fisherman. That is why it is Bass Pro and not "Walleye Pro." There is definately a need for both. I have never had a problem with customer service for either one.

Cabela's has the best service by far!
Bass Pro has stuff that you find hard to find anywhere else and ship fast so they both do a great job too as I see it.
Cabela's has the best in store staff I have ever seen for fishing and hunting, at least in the Grand Forks area. Great team up there! If I need something they find it or get it ASAP, that is great.

In Minnesota--Mills Fleet Farm. If you enjoy spending a lot more on the same tackle, shop Bass Pro or Cabelas. i;ve been to both places numerous times and walked out empty handed all of the times. I can't believe the people that spend 20-25% more on outdoors supplies and then have the nerve to complain about the cost of taking their kid to a movie. Shop wise and be rich.
mills is ok but all they do is hire some one who needs a job. not someone who goes out and do it. and for all you fisherman. thoes bigger stores order maybe once a year on stuff where your local bait store orders weekly or even daily. and the can tell you right away what to buy. who would you rather give your money to someone you dont ever see or talk to or to someone whos trying to feed his familyand maybe make a buck or two.

In my area, if I don't order from a catalog, I will never find what I am looking for. The few tackle shops I go to wouldn't know a walleye lure if it snagged them in the shorts.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-01 AT 11:16AM (CST)[p]I am a Cabela's person, but Bass Pro is ok too. On the few occasions that I have had bad products from Cabelas, they went out of their way to make it right. I am carefull what I buy of Cabela's brand and what I buy name brand though. Most of Cabela's stuff is OK, but some is entry level quality. I don't like their reels, optics etc, but I like their clothing, rods, muzzleloaders etc.
I will try to find what I want at local shops 1st, and if they have it close to reasonable price, and the person helping me doesn't have a crappy attitude, or blow cigarette smoke at me while they belch on their budwiser, I'll buy it there 1st.
I am yet to have a Cabela's person give me an "attitude" instead of an answer to my question. And that is worth alot.

As I said in my earlier post, I buy most my stuff locally when I can. (I think most guys do.) But I do enjoy a few trips to Cabelas a year to get those things I can't gt locally and to just browse and get ideas. And I don't expect local shops to match the big guy's prices, but for example I won't pay $45.99 for a CVA Illuminiator muzzleloader sight locally when Cabelas and Bass Pro have it for $17.99 (this is a true example).
tstik & fred, do you buy your computer from a local small electonics dealer or a "Best Buys" or "COMP USA". How about home improvement stuff, your corner hardware store or Home Depot and Menards.

I always pick up as much as I can at our local (Real) tackle shops. Anything they don't have I order from BPS or Cabelas. There is a new Gander Mountain opening near me (Peoria, IL) that will probably hurt our locals that have been here forever, and I hate that. Especially when the big chain stores are seldom cheaper. Just bigger and bigger does not equal better to me.

Have been a Cabelas customer for years, Great service and they stand behind their products. I went to the Bass Pro shop in Gurney and was not treated well. Maybe that person was having a bad day, but I won't go back.

Like I really have a choice! If you want to buy all your catfish tackle come to Kansas. Alot of bait and tackle shops here! Not! If I fish a lake that has a bait and tackle shop on it I will usually buy some stuff there, Pop, chips and crawlers. The rest of the stuff they mostly carry is geared towards catfish or bass. If someone were to open a decent shop up here and carry specie specific tackle I would give them my business, but for now I have to shop mail order. There is a new Dicks Sporting Goods opening in Topeka, if it's anything like the one I visited in Michigan and they carry half the fishing tackle that store had I will be spending a lot of time and money there.

I'd hate to be your charge card! Bass pro, Cabela's and Gander all within 20 miles!
I like both but end up speding most of my $$'s at Gander where I can touch/see/play before I buy.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-11-01 AT 11:01AM (CST)[p] I think everyone can appreciate a local bait shop putting you onto fish, with the right bait. Most of this information comes to them, from the local fishing public, not from actual on time fishing by the salesmen. As this world gets smaller and smaller, and more ppl get access to this type of information thru the net , email, and cell phones, you are going to find the local guy clamping his mouth tighter than a walleye in a cold front. I think this is understandable. I can remember a recent call to Pierre, to ask for the local bite. They painted a rosy picture, so we headed out, only to find that we couldnt find a bite anywhere. We stopped in on the way home, and they said that the fishing has been slow for several days. Upon arriving home, I decided to try another call to the same bait shop, and got the same rosy picture painted as before, only I had just left there 6 hours earlier. Did I get mad, no, because I just understood that it was just business. Will I depend on that type of information again? Doubtful. If you're going to go fishing, just go do it. You will almost always be behind the last good bite, and infront of the next good bite. If you happen to get in on the start of a bite, You're luckier than me most times. Im a local fisherman, and I buy local. I go to the big superstores, and walk away wondering why I even went there. Even the return bin seldom has any buys.
