View Full Version : mayfly's
i was just on lakevision and selected kelly's island. right on the camera lens is this big mayfly. not only does the camera show the lake condition but you get a close up view of the mayfly's. maybe that's the reason we have'nt seen to many fishing reports?. i sure hope they are over with by the middle of june....pepe

It's not a mayfly, it's a mufflehead. Mayflys are probably about 3 weeks away.

thanks not yet. it sure looked like a mayfly. i've seen them on the camera lens before and thought they were mayfly's, now i know to look a lot closer. i don't like the idea that the mayfly's will be out in about 3 weeks. that's about when we will be there....pepe
We have June Bugs which come out in May. & Mayflies that come out in June.
I guess May Bug & June Fly just don't sound right.

A mayfly and a Junebug are the same thing.
That just can't be. A June Bug is actually a June Beetle, not a fly at all. While not so thick as May Fly's out here, out West, they are.

-lots of different mayflies...
Scientific Name:
* Class - Insecta. Order - Ephemeroptera. Suborders - Schistonota or Pannota
Common Names:
* Mayflies, Mays, Upwings, Duns, Spinners, Dippers, Fish Flies
General:
The many types of Mayflies are split into either the 'splitbacks' or the 'fusedbacks' with three super families each. Those are then designated as to whether the nymphs are swimmers, crawlers, burrowers, or clingers and often that is determined by their habitat. With all this variety, the following description is somewhat generic.

They are two diffrent insects. The May Fly mautres in June and flies around and makes good fish food in june.
Junebugs are a beetle that show up late april or may and eat your shrubs. Junebug is also the pet name Jonny Cash had for June carter.

The smaller mayflies are hatching now on Black Lake near Cheboygan in the northern part of Michigan's lower peninsula--we get about four different size hatches--surface temps in parts of the lake are right around 62 degrees.
