View Full Version : Best replacement treble hooks?
I've got my crankbaits cleaned up and ready to go. My trebles look like they would be better replaced than sharpened. What brand of replacement treble is best, and do you know of a place where I can buy them in bulk at a price that won't necessitate me having to break my piggy bank? Thanks.

The only trebles I use are mustad tripple grip hooks in sizes down to six. Anything smaller than six is way to light wire of a hook. I had some size 8's and they bent up and broke right away.

The best treble replacements on the market are the Kahle Trebles from Eagle Claw. They have a wider bite than the Mustad Triple Grips, are a stronger hook and cost less. This is a rare case where less expensive is better.

The prices for the Mustad Triple Grip hooks are currently priced lower per hook in both Cabelas and Bass Pro catalogs than in the Jann's Netcraft catalog, although Jann's does give you a choice of long or short shank.

Mustad bronze round bends are economical and suprisingly rust free and come reasonably sharp. 25pk will enable you to purchase a complete range of sizes. There thin diameter gives for reasonable hook penetration, and they straighten out well, sharpen easily and can be bent back.100pk are available but hard to find. Steel hooks don't last as long, and are harder to sharpen and once they start to rust look out. My secience product on my dash board of some #27 sevenstrand wire to a number #6 premium steel treble hook with a little bottom moss dryed to one barb right near the defroster this hook has not been wet a all but rusts daily due to the humidity in the middle of the winter! the humidity is a whole lot heavy in summer.
I agree sharpen and replace often.
I personally go with Gamakatsu EWG's on my Crankbaits.
Usually replace them straight out of the box.
The shanks design is prime for gripping into a fishes mouth, and with Gamakatsu you are getting an -extremely- sharp hook.

Go to the ReefRunner site order the VMC reverse barb hooks. They have to be the stickiest hooks I've ever dealt with. Used to use Excaliber's but switched last year to the VMC's. Just don't think the triple grips feel as sharp or worked any better. That's just my opinion and it's worth what you paid for it. Check out any reefrunner lure and see if you don't stick yourself. They are sharp right out of the box. Never had to sharpen one before use. Those hooks must be good,,,, even factory can't dull them.
