I would recommend you take a look at a Shimano Calcutta and a fiberglass, or real flexible graphite rod. Whatever reel you get I'd try to stay with a lower gear ratio. The Calcutta is about as quick as you want, unless your tossing Rattling Raps. I run those things about as fast as I can in the summer months. You can get some real hard strikes. I'd definitely recommend fiberglass rods using those things.
One of my favorite outfits to cast crankbaits is a Berkley Series One Steelhead rod. It is 8'2" long and it can throw a bait a mile. It is stiff enough to set the hook but will seldom allow a fish to pull free.
