View Full Version : Fireline Knots
I just got some Fireline and I'm not sure what is the best knot to use when tying on jigs. What do you guys use? I also would like to know if this stuff is all what it cracked up to be? I have always used trilene XT and improved clinch knots. Thanks for any info.

Andy - the best knot to use tying jigs with fireline is the Palimar knot. If you don't know how to tie it go to the Berkely website. Fireline works great in some situations. I love it for jig fishing. You feel everything, and will usually straighten your hook before breaking your line. I have gone back to 10 lb XT for trolling. I had problems getting planerboard lineclips to hol on Fireline.

Polomar knot. Back-to-back Uni knot for putting on a mono leader.

Fire line is great but there is no streach so you have to wait a little after you get a hit and give up a little line to make sure you get a hook set. Good luck and bag a big one.

I've switched to almost all Palomar knots for superlines and mono for jigs, hooks, swivels, Dipseys, leaders, just about every application except tying line to line.
What convinced me was a knot-strength testing machine at a conference -- Berkley had one set up and demonstrated knot strength with a variety of lines and knots. Palomar was consistently superior.

I also use the palomar knot for all lines. One thing to think about with the fireline this early, is that there a thousands of micro fibers that stick out of the side of the line, and these will freeze water droplets on if you are fishing in freezing temps. I still use XL for all jig fishing, and only use the superlines for trolling plugs.
If you like the improved clinch or trilene knot... they'll work fine if you just give them three extra wraps before wetting and cinching them.
You can also find Palomar and Uni knots on the knot page of walleye central off their main page. It takes a bit of practice to snug up a Palomar knot using fireline, but it is the ONLY knot to use unless you are willing to gamble on losing fish and tackle.
