My old Luhr Jensen file is starting to look as bad as my hooks. What is currently the best sharpening vehicle? Are any of the electrics acceptable or is the best way still filing by hand?

I have tried a lot of them - including several electrics. I keep coming back to the silver - pen sized - folding diamond hone. It is flat on one side, and has a hook slot on the opposite side. It is about the size of a ball point pen. It is typically silver and black in color and costs about $7.00

I find that this in general - does an excellent job on all sized hooks with minimum effort.

I find that all of the electrics that I have tried - generally make a cone shaped hook that doesn't seem to work as well as a triangle shaped hook, with sharper cutting edges.

Take care

Tough Guy agree. Also think electrics take off to much meat when not careful. Tough Guy like meaty hooks for strength. T.G. out.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-11-01 AT 06:32PM (CST)[p]R E W , the one that you are refering to is made by E-Z lap. it is a real good sharpner for most hooks, for the larger hooks for musky and salmon it is best to start them with the flat sided files, and finish with the ez lap, or the smaller files, or stones. good luck and good fishin.
