I enjoy fishing some remote canadian lakes with several friends. The possibility of an unscheduled overnighter on an island on a rainy cold night far from camp is a possibility. I wondered what everybody keeps in the boat for survival stuff for these trips? Stuff like sven saws, tarps for a lean to/tent, etc. What do you guys pack? JN

here's a start on top of what you indicated, a couple dry bags with xtra cloths and these items:

everything to start a fire, cellphone if coverage is available, first aid kit, hatchet or small wire log saw, flare gun, marine strobe pinned to life vest, flashlight & xtra bateries, grabber hand warmers, loud whistle or air horn, compass or GPS, small mess kit to cook with, signaling mirror, mylar survival blankets, and high energy snacks.

like the boy scouts say..."be prepared"

"go outside and play"

I am not sure, but I believe flare guns are illegal in canada.

I concur. In addition, one should throw in a few "glow sticks", batteries don't run down, and bulbs don't break when it is dropped.

Flair guns are legal in Canada. The type we see here a lot are the plastic 12 guage type. If you have a flair gun that is dual purpose that is it can shoot regular 12 guage rounds you have a problem. A travel plan with someone at camp or your outfitter and a game plan when someone is overdue is also very important. Level heads prevail when trouble happens. It is nice to have a plan ahead of time.We started in the last years to carry the FRS radios. They have been handy on many occasions. You should always be ready to spend a night in the bush. I have always went with the worst case scenario in mind. Plan for the worst (within reason) and go get em. One last thing...If trouble happens and you have prepared for it, it is a very comforting thought that the boys are coming to get you.
Good luck: Frank
