View Full Version : Jigs: Tie on versus clip on
I've seen guys both tie on and clip on their jigs while
verticle jigging.
What's your thoughts? Any difference??
I have never seen anyone clip on a jig. I always tie it on. One reason you have nore control of how your jig rides in the water. Depending on where you place the knot it will cause the jig to be vertical or more horizontal.

Ditto. Tie it on. Not only for the adjustments listed but the clip (Snap Swivel) also ads more hardware on top of the jig that looks un-natural.
However, if you want to use a snap swivel for quick changes, tie a 12" mono leader, of sorts, to the jig with a loop knot at the other end of the line and conect your snap swivel to that loop end. This will provide the best of both worlds.
I have several colors and weights rigged prior to leaving the dock. I also play with the leader line weight and type depending on the type of water, the bite and the fish I am after. If your leader is lighter then your main line, you can snap off a snagged jig without loosing a lot of line or other terminal tackle.

For vertical jigging, I always tie on, but if I'm shallow pitching jigs and plastic or minnows, I'll use a snap most of the time. I've never been convinced that it hurts the fishing, especially shallow or at night. Vertical jigging gives a fish a little more opportunity to look over a jig than they would have if you were casting.
