Does anyone know if it's possible (legal) to tent camp in areas other than in parks?

Yes it is. If you are a non-resident you can tent camp on
Crown land. You might need to get a camping permit depending on a couple of different factors(area, are you a landowner in Ontario etc. etc.)----check with the MNR.
