Got out fishing the other day for the first time, it was about 30 degrees, over the course of the winter I wound fireline on my Stradic, well the first snag I got you could pull the line off the spool with your hand, it was slipping. Now when I wound this it was tight having wound it with the line wrapped around my finger wearing a leather glove. So I took the reel into the house and the next day could not budge it, could the cold weather have shrunk the spool to the point of slippage? How can I eliminate this...with mono backing?

River Rat, I wrap a layer of electrical tape around the spool before I spool the Fireline and I haven't had a problem with slipping since then.

This is common with all the SuperLines and seems to happen more often in cold weather. I used to repair reels and when people complained about the drag slipping in cold weather but not at normal tepturature I would put the reel in the freezer for a bit and Bingo, the line would slip. Either run a mono backing or electrical tape.

I'll third that! I use a mon backer (I have used tape too) just because I don't see the need to fill my spool completely full with superline so I fill it 1/3 to 1/2 full with mono first. Have not had the slippage problem since.

AFTER I TIE THE LINE ON THE REEL I TAKE A SMALL PEICE OF SCOTCH TAPE AND PLACE IT OVER THE KNOT AND TAPE IT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE REEL AND I HAVE NEVER HAD FIRELINE OR SPIDER WIRE SLIP IN ANY WEATHER.

For spinning reels, I have always anchored the line on the clip that is on the spool. I do not have a Stadic, but I have numerous other Shimano reels (Sedonas, Stymetres, Saharas) and all have the clip, so I suspect that it is on the Stradic. I have not had any problems with slippage in any temperature with Fireline over the past three years of use. I do use the electrical tape on the knot for the bait casters that I have, and it works for me. I am careful to have as close to exactly one complete wrap of electrical tape on th baitcasting spool to keep it in balance.

I second everything said on this thread, I too spool about one half of my reel with mono, tie the two ends together with a nail knot. It saves money and stops ALL slipping.

I use mono backing on all Fireline. I go to the extreme of measuring how much line I put on the reel to maximize 1 spool of Fireline. Example: 275 feet of Fireline will fill 3 ultralite spools with 90 feet of line or 2 with 185 ft. Experiment with amount of mono to put on spool so that 90 ft. of Fireline fills it properly. You only have to do it once cause when its time to respool just peel off fireline down to the mono. Also, I put a piece of tape over the knot used to join the two lines together. This keeps the knot from working it's way through the wraps of Fireline and hanging up when I cast. $12.00 sounds like a lot to pay for fishing line but if you can fill 2-3 reels and use it for 2-3 years it's not so bad.
