I don't own my own boat and was wondering if you can put a non portable fish finder on a rental boat that is already in the water. Thanks

Yes you can. I have a portable Lowrance X-85 that works great. The transducer has a suction cup that you can just stick to the side of the boat. Works well, and when you get your own boat, you can just mount the permanent transducer for the x-85 and then pull the unit off the boat when you travel.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-01 AT 04:18PM (CST)[p]Yes you can. Just hook it up to a motorcycle battery. Mount your transducer to the bottom a 20" 1x4 and C-clamp this board to the transom at the proper level to get good readings from your X-duder

Sorry I was vague. The X-85 is a non-portable fish finder by definition. All you need is a power source like a motorcycle battery and a suction type transducer which you can find easily.

Every fishfinder is portable, the one's labeled as such, come mounted in a case with a suction cup transducer. You can however, buy a finder that mounts in your boat, that comes with a transducer that mounts to your boat. Then buy a suction cup transducer that is compatable with your finder, now it's portable, all you need is a battery and charger. you hook up + and - to proper terminals on your battery then two wires on the back of the finder ,one power from battery, the other from transducer. Then mount the transducer to the transom of your rental. Takes less time then it has taken me to one finger type this out for you.GOOD LUCK & GOOD FISHIN

Chris:
Most of the units can be both "permanent" and portable. For example, I used my Eagle Ultra with a permanent transom transducer mount in my boat. To use it as a portable, I just removed the sonar unit from the boat (leaving all the boat wiring intact) and hooked it to a battery box with a suction cup transducer and put it in my canoe or took it to Canada for fly-ins. Any of the Lowrance X series will do the same. If you have any of the Eagle or Lowrance units, you can purchase a kit to make it portable for $65 (Cabela's or BPS). Lot's of flexibility that way.
