View Full Version : location of GPS Antenna
Where is the best location to mount a GPS antenna on a dual console Lund Boat?
Mark - Sorry I can't help you. I don't know either. I just bought a Raytheon 425 and am waiting for my 20' Alaskan to come in, but am wondering the same thing. Surely someone out there has some experience with this. One question I have is whether antenna distance from the windshield is a factor, i.e., can it block out the signal and need the mount be "above" the gunnel? Any help would be appreciated. Bill
You need to wire up your gps, then try different lacations to see which is the most out of the way to prevent damage. I have a crestliner sportfish, and have mine in front of the starboard windshield on the gunnel.Your gps will show if the satellites are locking in. If they do then you know that you are ok. I actually am only using the top half of my attenna module without the base, it only sticks up about an inch...your gps unit may not permit this. I also noticed that a slight difference in height can make all the differnce in reception.

The only GPS I own is a handheld. If it helps you decide in the location for your unit:
GPS's work by line of site. If the antenna can see the satellite, it will work. If it cant, it won't. Pick a spot that works best for you with the least obstructions to the antenna. Moving the antenna a foot or two will make little difference to the unit when the satellite is 300 miles away. Remember, your reciever will probably lock onto 6 - 8 satellites at a time, so EVERY direction counts.
Hope it helps,
John
